I'm making a curry tonight. I've realised I have to fit in as many curries as possible before moving to the US; where curries and curry pastes are far less plentiful!

We're down in Palm Beach County. There are three around here, with varying levels of brit-food.

Maybe decent was a little too generous, but they do have things like Mars Bars, Lion Bars, Chocolate Hobnobs, Robinsons squash, HP sauces, A couple of those colemans packets, Heinz Beans, some pickled onions, Branstons Pickle, Liquorice allsorts and several other things.

Found a great place when we were down in key west, but it was very expensive.

I laughed out loud at that bolded bit. laughing.gif

Yep, your Publix definitely has more products than my Publix. We have one of the HP sauces but it's not the real stuff. I'm up in Lake. But, funny.... we were down in PB County a couple of weeks ago for a wee vacation with my rellies from W Yorkshire. Didn't go into the Publix though. laughing.gif

Yeah. We've kinda lucked out with those items. I guess there must be a lot of brits down here. There used to be a British pub just down the road, but it's gone now. There's still a few around though, although the ones I know of are further south in the Miami and Ft Lauderdale areas.

There is a British store in Lake Worth (a few miles from us) but we've not been yet. It was closed the days we could get there out of season and we only discovered it in the summer. We'll make it there one day.

There's a great British pub in Kissimmee(?) (let me check that with my hubby and look up the name of it) that plays all the games and has great fish & chips with mushy peas and a Guinness! Sorry I can't more specific. I'm still feeling my way around here. blush.gif I think my husband was the only American in the place. Everyone else had a British accent. laughing.gif

That's not the one on the main highway through kissimmee is it? I seem to remember a place just off that with a union jack on the outside or roof or something!

Not sure about LA fiance's but there's a few Southern Californian fiance's certainly. Jeraly (currently otherwise engaged on honeymoon in Hawaii) organised the California facebook group, can never remember where her SO is from but it's SoCal somewhere. My fiance is from Bakersfield. There's a few of us floating around smile.gif

I think it just might be...found it completely by accident...a friend of mine and I (we are both anglophiles) were coming home from something at Disney, and we really wanted some fish and chips. So we were going down 192 in Kissimmee and saw the union jack hanging outside a storefront in a strip mall...We thought, "that looks promising," and decided to go in...and then we realised that we were the only Americans in the pub, and it was full...loved the food, and we've been going back occasionally (money and time are tight at the moment)...

Yes, it's on the main road. When we were there it was surrounded by construction so we weren't even sure it was open. It's in a very small plaza.

Oh. Just read GEG's posts and now I'm confused as to which pub we're talking about. laughing.gif

just thought I'd pop by and see what i've been missing. Really bogged down with sorting stuff out, packing and various friends and family mambers dragging me here, there and everywhere to do things "one last time". You'd think the way some of them go on that I'll never be coming back!

Anyways, wee bit of good news, Nick has managed to land himself a job, it's not ideal but it's work and it's money so that's some of our financial worries lifted a tad.
*julez*
It must be tough, packing and saying goodbye and trying to fit stuff in "one last time". On the one hand you have so much to look forward to, but on the other there's so much to leave behind. I give anyone who makes "the big move" a lot of credit, cos even with lots of love, its still a big thing to do!

I'm so happy to hear that Nick found a job, debz! It must certainly ease your mind.

I can't believe its just over two weeks until you're here in the US!!!

And today is Gillian's big day! Happy Wedding to English Muffin!!!
weedebz
indeed...best wishes to the Bride of the Day, Gillian. (English Muffin)

I'm starting to really worry about financial matters. For example, clothes. I haven't factored in money for clothes anywhere in my budget or in Alex's earnings and I'm getting to the stage where my clothes and shoes are getting really quite old/worn/holey. I'm not going to have any decent clothes for interviews!

Good morning, folks. I hope English Muffin had a lovely wedding! Did anyone feel the earthquake last night? It was mildly disturbing - thought someone was trying to break in at first!
snowfrostedlashes
Didn't feel the earthquake here (was fast asleep anyways, so was oblivious) but was interested to hear about it on the news this morning.

Am also having something of a what to bring / what not to bring sense of unease, since I don't really want to ship a whole lot if I can avoid it, and also think my winter wardrobe is going to be rather inadequate on the whole... but I figure it will be best to buy some extra jumpers and things when I've moved since it will avoid the need to pack them.

It's hard waiting to move, but I think I'm going to need the time to sort everything out.

Am eagerly awaiting news and updates regarding various peoples weddings!

What a morning!

Russ has had the flu for a few days and has discovered the joys (!) of having no paid sick leave. Seeing as we were going to both buy cars this weekend, he's pretty cheesed off (I get mine and we have to wait to buy his now).

Still, I have a new job starting monday, and will go to it in my new car. Can't wait!

Sorry to hear about Russ -- Bruce was well cheesed off himself after he dislocated his shoulder and had to take a day of unpaid leave. But... congrats on the new job and car, Gwen! Now, you go fuss over your boy -- they not-so-secretly love it!

Wow...tumbleweeds in the Off Topic thread! Even Charles hasn't poked his head in this morning... unsure.gif

But I have terrific news! Bruce passed his on-the-road driving test today so he is now a licensed Connecticut driver. Not that I ever doubted he would pass, but he was SO nervous about passing, even though he's held a UK licence for nearly 20 years without even a speeding ticket. The last piece of the puzzle, in some ways, has now fallen into place.

Happy, happy Thursday! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

yep...congrats to Bruce.

I have finally sorted out my finances and just sent the bulk of my money to Nick using interchange. Got good rate and it should arrive in his account on Wednesday, exactly one week before I get there! I'm leaving my UK account open for a few months whilst I get settled there so also just arranged for my mammy to be co-signer
