Ugh. Peanut butter.

I get ill at just the thought of it. If anyone's interested in why
here is the story.

Morning all. I'm at my favourite place in the whole universe, the DMV, registering my Ford Taurus (aka the Snoreus or Moby Dick). Alas, the Bitchin' Camaro was not for me (way too much like a hot rod) so I now have the Snoreus. It's like driving a big Dra-lon couch.

We don't have a very good selection of British foods here in Buffalo. Wegman's carry some items, like PG Tips, Bird's Custard, HP Sauce, Heinz Beans....BUT there are so many other items I'd really enjoy having readily availabel in the grocery store. If I'd have realized that World Market was just outside of Cleveland I'd have stopped in when were there last summer....but a 2 hour drive just for that, not likey any time soon!

Just looked at the World Market site and there is one in Richmond MN, just 62 miles from where I will be living. Just over an hours drive to stock up every month or so seems a good option.
In the meantime I will be scouring the stores in La Crosse, WI. I've already found out that Target does a Boots range of cosmetics

We just ordered from englishteastore.com in lieu of being able to actually stop at Jolly's (www.jollygoodgrub.com) on our way back through New York. Which means that we can at least get our sweets, though a trip to Jolly's is worth it if you're missing proper bacon, Lincolnshire sausages, Cornish pasties, good cheese, and all of the lovely meat and dairy you can't get through Customs!
Have to say, englishteastore.com is very reasonably priced.

Gwen, you raised my hopes and then dashed them! I saw "New York" and immediately assumed Manhattan (sorry Julez! typical myopic CT person here, thinkin' all NY is NYC) -- and then envisioned a quick jaunt to Jolly's when I'm in the City next Tuesday. But apparently Saugerties is in upstate NY and about 100 miles away from me. It was the thought of bacon that made me even consider it...
Hmmm... 100 miles isn't THAT far away...

I must admit, I do love Wegman's! I'm born and bred Buffalo, so if you're ever stopping by your second home, give us a holler! We'd love to meet up with some VJ peeps! But don't be jealous that I'm in Buffalo - its bitterly cold and windy today. Griff asked me when he could expect springlike weather and I told him May. He said, "That wasn't the answer I was hoping for." I told him its better to have low expectations and be pleasantly surprised if it happens sooner!

They are already as far South as Baltimore, so you may want to begin your email campaign to bring Wegman's further South. You could also start a petition. I bet you'll find a lot of support for an excellent super market! Good luck!!!

So, as many of you know, Griff and I were married this past weekend. (YAY!!) So I wanted to share a funny story about a gift that my British husband and I received from my brother and his girlfriend. They were the only people who actually purchased a gift (as opposed to a monetary gift) so I was really interested to see what item caught their eye for us. Inside the small box (still emblazoned with its $18.95 price tag

) was a round picture frame with the following words across the top, as well as printed on a piece of parchment within the frame:
"Tis good to be Irish."
While I have no doubt that it is indeed good to be Irish, I am still baffled as to why they felt this was an appropriate gift for us.

They are well aware of the fact that Griff is British. And though my family is of Irish descent, this struck me as an odd (and funny) gift for an American/Brit couple. I know they say its the thought that counts, but its doesn't seem they put much thought into this one!

Regarding the food, bring some with you!!! I used a small carry on bag and filled it with my favorite UK biscuits and sweets when I was over! I also stocked up on Branston Pickle. Yum! You can also have your family send you goody boxes once you are stateside!!

Congratulations on getting married, julez!

And that is a very bizarre present - are they normally bad gift-givers?
I have one aunt and uncle who send rather strange gifts - a Disney nightdress for 8 year olds to my sister when she was 14, for example - and it's good fun trying to find ways to compliment the gift when writing thank you notes.
