Question: I am editing my policy paper right now. I have had a lot of useful feedback so far on it, and am incorporating much of it. I have one problem though: one of my editors is suggesting changing "amongst" to "among" and "enquiry" to "inquiry". I have no issue changing to American spelling, but the words I have used are both variants used in America. Should I change them? To me, it's like altering my writing voice, not just changing the spelling.

Did your editor give a reason why he thought it would be better to change the words? I would state that it would feel like it would be changing your voice.
Speaking of happy news...Nicky is thrilled that the Fox Soccer Channel came with the standard cable package. He can now keep up with Sky Sports News!

She told me I could take the suggestions or leave them. I'm using about 80% of them. I'm certain if I tell her it would affect the paper's tone she would be happy. And, it also helps that she's one of my pals! You're right -- I should just talk to her.

I've always though "amongst" is a Britishism. Is it used here? People definitely pointed it out as such when I returned.

I think so. Same with whilst.
When I worked for this one ad firm in NYC, our UK design team used enquiry on our site & everyone was like, NO, definitely not that spelling. Americans do not use it.

The intended audience of the document is not just Americans -- in fact, I think most of the people who will read it are in the UK and the Netherlands. I don't know -- it just doesn't sound right to me to say "among". If it really is an issue for the lead faculty member (who is also the hardest ### in the research center) then I'll change it.
I don't want to sound twee! But I also want to sound like myself.
By the way, if I NEVER see this policy briefing again in my life I will die a happy woman.

Morning! She's a naturalized (see I used the z!) American citizen from Serbia. I will bend to the will of the University on this one -- they have particular usage they insist upon, like it's always "U.S." not "US", for example.
I think I need to just lump it on this one and go for the Americanisms -- after all,
I'm not going to read this steaming pile again in my life.

well the wedding was yesterday and it went so well. The weather was AMAZING. Everything went so well. Only issue was that Nick's hands had swollen in the heat and I couldn't get his ring over his knuckle but other than that couldn't have asked for a more special day. I'll get some pics soon.

A cheese restaurant??!?! *faints* *goes to book a ticket to New Haven*
I spent last night drinking pitchers of beer with my fellow Westside Detroiters watching our beloved Wings choke in triple overtime. We almost had it in the bag (and the Stanley Cup being polished in the dressing room), but with only 40 seconds to go Pittsburgh equalized. Oh well, I guess I have another excuse to drink beer during the week.

Don't forget the shop too. It is filled with cheeses from all over -- plenty of English, Welsh and Irish cheeses (didn't see any Scots varieties), French a-plenty (lots of the stinky gooey stuff I love), Spanish, Italian, American artisanal, etc etc. And then preserves, and mustards, and lovely breads and crackers, and all these nummy saucissons and salamis and other sausage type products.
They also do home tastings! My supervisor had a cheese tasting night a few months ago. The Caseus folks came out to his house with all these cheeses; my supervisor provided the wine. I am seriously going to miss this place.

I am partial to the French Onion soup and the frites are totally amazing.

just wanted to note that I have stumbled upon a British section in every supermarket I've been in so far (Kroger, HEB and Randalls) and every one of them has had Heinz baked beans

two out of the three have also had Ribena... I've seen McVities of various varieties as well

That is true with goat/sheep cheeses....I don't have the problems with them as I do with other dairy products. I am not sure why but ice cream is the worst for me. Last night I had a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich (only 140 calories in one) w/o taking the lactaid and I was miserable all night
