does anywhere other than Australia use 'POETS* Day' on Friday?
I never really liked that one either...

Ugh. Never heard of it and wish I still hadn't!
My other un-favorite terms are when someone says they're doing something for "shits and giggles" or describing complaining as "pissing and moaning", or saying someone is "full of piss and vinegar".
StillThePrettiest
Apr 2 2008, 02:00 PM
slightly different, but I still twitch uncontrollably whenever someone says they 'could care less'

I think I'm going to spontaneously combust in the States...
*julez*
Apr 2 2008, 02:05 PM
How about irregardless?
Or when someone refers to pictures as pitchers?
*shudders*
But don't worry too much, StP, there are still some of us who care about language here in the US.
Jeraly
Apr 2 2008, 02:10 PM
Or how about "axing" someone a question?
I admit I am guilty of the shits and giggles thing

and I curb my "could care less" around StP

I used to say couldn't then picked up the bad habit from Jeremy - I know it makes no grammatical sense but it just rolls off the tongue nicer and everyone knows what it means
StillThePrettiest
Apr 2 2008, 02:11 PM
I've heard 'irregardless' before, but strangely, only in conversations like this one, and never used seriously... maybe that's a yankee thing

and I know there are... my fiancé's one of them
*julez*
Apr 2 2008, 02:32 PM
Sadly, I have heard 'irregardless' used in serious conversations. Too many times to count. I think people think it makes them sound intelligent. *sigh*
If I hear it one more time I may even *loose* my mind.

LOL
Another of my faves!

Oh Jeremy is terrible for that! He doesn't "ax" me questions though which is good...
He also uses "theigh" among other rather ropey spellings

Do I know that..? I can't put my finger on it...

Apr 3 2008, 04:37 AM
On the subject of 'ax' = 'ask' - I thought that was solely a Futurama thing (and I'm still not sure why they used it in that, either).
All of the little spelling differences are going to get me when I move to the US - 'judgment' not 'judgement' and 'canceled' not 'cancelled', for example.
'Could care less' and 'irregardless' annoy me - although what annoys me more is that 'irregardless' is apparently actually in Firefox's built-in dictionary!

'Effect' and 'affect' are another two words that are often muddled.
My mother is a huge stickler for correct English - we'd always get told off for saying 'different to' instead of 'different from' and for asking 'can I have dessert' at the dinner table instead of 'may I have dessert'.

How about "could of"?!?!?!

Also jewelry and jewellery...

Yes; could of, would of, should of...that's an extremely common one. Erm...what else? I'm curious now!

Afternoon everyone! It is absolutely gorgeous here today, I'm so happy the sun is shining!
Yesterday was a big day for us, we finally posted the I-130 & G325A for DCF. Been waiting over a year for this day!

One step closer to going home for good!
Jeraly
Apr 3 2008, 07:17 AM
Oh cool! I don't understand DCF - why do you have to wait? Does it take long? How does it actually differ from CR-1/K3/K1 etc?

You have to be married and living in the UK together for 6 plus months. We could have done it last year since I've been living here for over 2 years now but we needed money for the move.
The reason I originally moved to the UK was because it was so much faster and easier for me to get a UK visa. We agreed I would live here for a year or two and if I didn't like it we would do DCF and move back to San Francisco. Little did I know I would pretty much hate living here after my first 6 months but I've stuck it out!

Morning, folks! Off to London tomorrow afternoon... I haven't packed a stitch of clothing yet and I'm stuck at work until 6.30pm.

Hi Maven! Packing doesn't take long

Just a quick question - I can't seem to find any specific medical reviews - is there a place for them or would it be worth suggesting in the suggestions thread?
redkitty
Apr 3 2008, 07:48 AM
Wow, I see your medical & interview are coming up real fast! Good luck with both, I'm sure you will pass with flying colors! Looks like you and I are leaving here around the same time, I'm flying home the last week of June as well.
Leaving your home and family/friends/job is really hard...let me know if you ever want to get together on Glos Rd for a drink sometime and we can chat!
Jeraly
Apr 3 2008, 07:51 AM
You know what - that sounds like a grand plan! Coming up real fast and I only got packet 4 yesterday! Not much time to get used to the idea but at least it will be short, sharp and hopefully painless!! I can feel my tummy turning over just thinking about it!!
It would be nice to meet up for a drink sometime when it starts getting warmer - maybe one Saturday I can arrange to get a bus back home instead of drive and we can chew the fat over living here and living in the US and compare notes

Apr 3 2008, 07:56 AM

Jeraly - there are at least some medical reviews (including mine and babbles', from memory) in the stickied thread in this section

and Firefox puts a squiggly red line under 'irregardless' for me... maybe because I told it to use UK English
Jeraly
Apr 3 2008, 08:24 AM
Haha! I have IE in work so I can't tell

I'll check out those reviews... I look at the sticky threads but I get fed up reading them when they mainly get posted in by n00bs saying hello and where do they have to post!!!!
Alex & Rachel
Apr 3 2008, 08:28 AM
Ah! I hadn't read the stickied threads so I had no idea they'd been updated with recent medical experiences - like Jeraly I just assumed that it was full of people post irrelevant questions.

I just noticed this:

I saw the Tubes in concert (13 years ago!) It was really fun, and Fee Waibel (sp?) ripped off his pants, threw them into the audience and they landed on my ex-husband's head! Then some other guy jumped on my ex, stealing the pants! Good times!
