When we got the SSN we were NOT married and the card is in the maiden name.

Now that we have the EAD can we get the name changed on the SSN card. Both the middle-name and the last-name have changed and the EAD shows the new last name and the new middle initial.

I would appreciate if people can share their experiences who have done name chage on their SSN card. Is this even doable at this point or have to wait until the approval of GC.

Thanks.

Yes you can do it after getting EAD card OR just wait until getting green-card and get the "With DHS Auth" notation removed and name changed at the same time, saving your self a trip to the SSA office.

Note: wait a few weeks for USCIS to update the database used by SSA to confirm immigrations status.

The name in line 1 of the SSN application (name to be shown on card) must agree with the name shown on the document submitted as evidence of identity, allowing for the applicant's option to use initials rather than a full first and/or middle name.

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name:

In cases where an alien applies for a replacement SSN card and submits an immigration document showing a name that is different from the name on the prior Numident record, accept the immigration document as evidence of the legal name. In these cases, the prior SSN card may have been issued in a name that was not the number holder’s legal name.

The documents acceptable as evidence of identity are now based on three factors: (1) the applicant’s age, (2) the applicant’s citizenship/alien status, and (3) the relative probative value of documents.

Primary Identity Evidence for an alien:

-- Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (includes temporary I-551 Stamp in combination with an
unexpired foreign passport when the I-551 Permanent Resident Card has not yet been issued)
-- Form I-94, Arrival/departure Record in combination with an unexpired foreign passport
-- Form I-766, Employment Authorization card
-- Form I-688B, Employment Authorization card

You can find detailed information regarding evidence that establishes identity on our Website at:
