Hi,

I am looking to book a ticket to move the US. I was looking to book a one-way ticket but these seem to be a lot more expensive than return tickets. Would I face any issues if I book a return ticket? Also what have others done when they have moved to the US?

Thanks for your help!!!

My fiance foud the same issue, as have many others before you! Last night he booked a round trip ticket with a return date of 31 July. He's hoping to have AP by then so he can possibly make a quick visit to the UK to see his Dad. Bottom line, buying round trip is fine!

I'm planning on doing something similar to Griff. Was looking to book a return but not coming back for 6 months! Glad to see someone else has done it.

I just want to be getting on a plane now to be with nick to look after him, just had email from his mammy, he's developed pnuemonia after the flu bug got into his lungs. Hate being so far away and feeling like I can't do anything for him.

I too am going to book a return flight.
The return is around £350 with a single at £1020.
No way am I paying that, there will just have to be an empty seat on the way back smile.gif

Edited to add, I dont know about booking a flight back for when I get AP. I will still have to get back to the USA. Will have to look at that

If you truly want a one way, book the cheapest roundtrip you can find (return date doesnt matter) and then just not use your return portion. If you are forever doing round trips from the UK, it makes it harder once you are in the US to plan and book tickets.

Would I get asked any questions at POE for having a return ticket? Also would there by any sort of penalties that airline/immigration have for not using the return portion.

Nope to both. First off, you're CR1/IR1 -- you'll have NO restrictions on leaving the US once you enter as you'll get the I-551 stamp, which is equivalent to a temporary green card until the physical card arrives. Second, the airline doesn't care if you use the second part or not -- they've sold a ticket, it's up to you to use it. If it makes you feel more safe, call them before the departure date to let them know your plans have changed and you won't be travelling. Immigration won't take note of your departure date either as you are a permanent resident as of the moment they process you, and not subject to the amount of time you can stay in the country (like a citizen).

Edited to add: Of course if you didn't use the FIRST portion of a return ticket, your entire flight would be cancelled, but that's not the situation in this case.

I came over on a K-1 with a return ticket. POE doesn't care, so I suggest just finding the cheapest option and booking that. good.gif

Correct - you can only not use the return portion - you need to use the outbound or the inbound is automatically canceled.

We always book return flights. even if you miss them, sometimes rescheduling them months later can still be cheaper! We did that with our last visit...booked a return flight, stayed past the return, then when we found out the interview date we just called up and said we needed to reschedule that leg and Virgin was more than helpful about doing it for us.

There are many places online that have very cheap ONE way tickets! Google for cheap tickets, and one of those websites will have a cheap one way ticket. Cheapest i found to LAX from Heathrow is 263 one way! i couldn't believe it. i just hope it is still like that after my interview on Friday when i book it. (depending on how the interview goes of course)

I paid 200 pounds for a one way flight from Dublin with American Airlines to Louisville via Kentucky.

Do a search on there website flying from Dublin you will notice big savings. I just got the Ferry to Dublin and stayed over night in a hotel in the airport as the hotels do a free shuttle bus and I found the airport to be good for shopping.

I have also gone through DUB a few times. Got a Ryanair flight the day before - hung out and DUB for the day and took my $200 (yes, USD) one way flight to EWR on Continental.

GOOD LUCK!!!
