Hi folks,

I am ready to send some missing docs(originals) to NVC in response to a RFE. My question is, should I put my case number on the original docs?

Many thanks for your prompt reply..

You should follow the instructions on the RFE exactly, which include enclosing a copy of the RFE itself with anything you return. Unless these are US government forms that bear your original signature or that of your spouse, you wouldn't normally send originals. What documents were requested?

Thanks for your reply. They asked my wife's original BC and MC. If I put case number on these originals, what will happen if I need to use them for any other purposes?

Yes, they should have case number at the top. Make some photocopies before you send them.

Does the instruction ask you to write case number on originals? In any case, one should not write case number on originals, but talk to NVC about it. Maybe you can use sticky notes which can be attached with originals.

Here's what we did:
We put the original document in a transparent sheet protector (found at most office supply stores, if you search "StaplesŪ Top-Loading Standard Sheet Protectors" at www.staples.com you'll find what I mean) and wrote the case number on the plastic protector. We made a three-hole punch for the DS-230 documents, so having the sheet protectors with 3 hole binding was nice. Of course we made photocopies.
That way (a) your document won't get damaged by a random act of water/solvent and (cool.gif it's not folded so it shouldn't get misplaced.

If they really need originals, then that's what I would do. I'd also provide them a clear photocopy and note that you would like the original returned at some point.

NVC always wants originals, they are returned at the interview (everything except the police certificates).

I like the sticky note or plastic cover idea. I didn't put our case number on any of the originals.

I would not mind writing case number on DS 230 original pages, but I would not write case number on original birth certificate, marriage certificate.

Yes, write them in lead pencil if they are original (so you can erase the case number later)
