hi!

a Florida marriage license costs $93.50. If you cannot afford this amount all at once, it may be possible to pay it in three installments over a ninety-day period. However, you will not receive the license until all payments are made. After purchasing the marriage license, you will need to wait three days before having the wedding ceremony and finalizing the marriage. Florida residents can get a discount on the license and waive the three-day waiting period by taking a marriage preparation course.

Yeah I agree,we only paid 50 dollars and had it in 3 days.
They used to have the blood tests for the antibody that could kill your baby when your pregnant.
Thank god they dont have that anymore, thats just stupid. What if a couple dont want kids??
In Germany when you go to the gyn.they test that there and thats the way it should be.

In most places, the blood test was for HIV.

I've never heard of an "antibody that kills babies" when related to marriage licenses. Hm. Actually, I've never heard of one period, but that's another thread.

There used to be some requirement for blood tests back in the day. My mom asked how come we got the marriage license so quick and when was the blood test. I was like, ummm, what blood test? She said when she got married in the the 70s, they had to take a blood test to make sure the 2 spouses blood was compatible to prevent children with Down's syndrome... or at least that's what they told her.
DakotaK1
Basicly what this was for is somthing to do with the bloodtype, they have positive or negative.
It was a certain blood type that when you have positive and the man has negative that you have to get a shot done.
The first born child is fine however the second pregnancy if no shot or anything done would kill the baby.

The blood tests that you used to have to take for a marriage licence are for Rubella (still required in many states). This disease can cause birth defects if contracted whilst pregnant. They also don't allow cousins to marry in certain states, so blood testing was carried out to check that the applicants were not related.

In no way does "having incompatible blood" cause Down Syndrome. That has to be the most singularly ridiculous piece of information I have ever heard in my life (not directed at you, Nanusia & Lukaszek, it is directed to the person who told your mother that!).

Marriage preparation course?

Someone in the Brit forum took that course, if I remember correctly (I think it was TheZilla). They would have had a 2 week wait otherwise.

If you don't take the marriage preparation course in Florida the price is $90 something. You have to wait 3 days to get married.

Marrige preperation course thats total BS!!!
Thats for ppl that are not very smart,to learn to know what their letting themselves into.Something like that could only come from America.
I would rather pay 90 Bucks than some old bag telling me how to do my marrige and tell me how to live with my husband!
Dan + Gemvita
Its just over $100 for a marriage licence in Minnesota or a lot cheaper if you go through a 12 hour course. 12 hours of my time is worth much more than that, so not happening.

We got the licence right away, but we had to wait 5 days before we could use it.

Haha. Maybe. At our wedding though, the Standesbeamter went on for seriously 35 minutes just babbling about the responsibilities of marriage. I recognize this is very abnormal, but still funny in this case to mention. Maybe he thought when two people marry at a blasphemous age for the country, then they need extra stern lecturing. I should have used the time to take a nap.

My husband didn't know English so the course was not going to happen. I agree with everyone here that it would have been stupid and pointless anyway. We dealt with living together then having a LD relationship - we know what it takes to make it.

I know New York is much cheaper (for marriage licenses). My mom said about ten years ago it was only $25. Even if it doubled it's a lot cheaper than Fleeerda.

In Albany county, I think it's about 40 dollars now.

We ALMOST considered taking the course at his church (I'm not an official member) so we could pay less but I'm not an official member so we couldn't, AND if we went somewhere else we'd have to pay, which would defeat the purpose of taking it.

I almost wish M hadn't been able to speak English when we got our license ... we had to sit there for 45 minutes because we had to read that dumb book they make you read before they'll even process the marriage license application. It took him forever to read, and his comprehension of it wasn't that great - "Does this mean if you die, I have to pay off all your credit cards?" It was a waste of time, can't imagine what a waste of time the marriage preparation course would be.

THOUGH, I don't think it's a bad idea to get some counseling or whatever before marriage, but anything state sanctioned is usually a bunch of b/s so they can say they're doing something to lower divorce rates or whatever the reason is. I think if you take the course you also have no waiting time until you can get married - this is pretty dumb, too ... as if because I didn't take the course now I need 3 days to think about it. We got our's in advance so we had to wait, but still.

FL has no state income tax so we get screwed everywhere else. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

93.50...plus 30.00 if you have the clerk of the court perform the marriage. So we paid them 123.50 for our's.

I couldn't remember the exact amount, but sounds right.
We didn't pay the $30 because we married in our friend's house and a fellow teacher married us for free (she loves to perform weddings and volunteered).
I still think the price is steep unsure.gif ...but that's IMO.
