I want to thank everyone on this forum for their generous help during the K-1 process and also, will likely need your continued help in the next several months.

I want to re-cap my fiancee's experience at the Chennai consulate.

Arrived at 8.30am.
Was allowed to enter the building at 8.45am.

At 9AM was called to present all the documents she was carrying and the person who went over the documents was a young Indian lady in her 20s.
She basically grilled my fiancee for a good 30 min.

she was asked the following questions

1.Why are you getting married? Do your parents know about it?
2.Why not pursue K-3 instead of K-1?

and this I think is almost getting personal.

3. She asked my fiancee if she was wearing the wedding chain(mangalasurthram) and asked her to show the chain around the neckline.

4. How do your parents know each other?

She intently looked into the engagement album and pestered my fiancee with several more questions.

Around 2.15PM she was called to the counter for face to face interview with an American lady in her 30s.

She asked the following questions:

1. How do you know each other?
2. How did this alliance come about?
3. You saw each other once and now planning on getting married. How come?
4. How would your parents come to US if you are getting married there?
5. What does your fiance do for living?

That's it...At the end she was told her passport will be couried home along with the Visa. kicking.gif kicking.gif

Congratulations!!!! I am sure you are very happy and relieved.

I do have one question though, was your fiance wearing a mangalsutra at the interview? If so, doesn't that signify that she got married in India in which case don't they object to giving the K1?

Thanks..yes..we are relieved.

We applied for K-1(fiancee) and NOT K-3(spouse) so not sure what has this got to do with wearing a mangalasuthram or not?

I would only think they are just following protocol to grill people..

My impression was that only married women wear the mangalsuthram. So if your fiancee was wearing one, that would mean that she's married to you and would qualify as a spouse and not fiancee? My knowledge in this area is not so good so apologies in advance smile.gif

Congrats Second Stage. In you have detailed list of questions asked in the interview, could you please jot them down here? It will help us out.

Again. who said she was wearing one?

I probably wasn't clear in my initial posting. My fiancee was wearing a regular fashionable chain around her neck and showed it to that person.

Thanks Second Stage. I would appreciate if you post the answers too (if they are not too personal). My hunch is that they would ask us the same. It is quite possible that my interview may be based at Chennai (if NVC decides to go region wise). Otherwise the consulate requested in 129F is New Delhi.

Why would the answers to these questions help you out, as they would be different for each person. For example, Second Stage's fiancee's answer to the question "Why are you getting married?" would and probably should be different from the answer your fiancee would give to this same question.

Knowing the general questions should suffice for you to prepare for the interview....and one should never assume that the same questions will be asked of you as were asked of someone else. It could be a different CO interviewing and ask different type of questions. As long as you have a genuine relationship, and take the time to know details about each other, you fiancee should have no problem answering any type of question posed.

Good luck,
-P
