I'm eating about 1900 calories a day and burning about 400 through exercise. That's supposed to result in a 1-1.5 lb weight loss per week for me. So far it's been working pretty well. I really want to be able to keep it off - that's far more important than seeing high numbers on the scale.
Atkins you will lose fast, but just put it back on! Not a good long term solution! (IMO of course, I know there are people who have succeeded in long term weight loss this way)

i used to work with a famous pastry chef who did the atkins diet and lost tons of weight. who woulda thought? he did STAY on it though... apparently he lost the weight long before i worked with him and he still didn't eat sugar. i can't imagine the willpower he had working with all those desserts and not sneaking a taste!

I believe a 14W is like a normal 15. I'm going by Lane Bryant sizes here. It's basically a way to make us Pooh shaped girls feel better about buying a bigger size.
Weird though that Old Navy 14 (not 14W) fits me but Gap 14 doesn't so I think it depends on the store too.

I see, kind of, lol. So a 15 is different from a 16? Does that mean that a 14W is really a 16 and a 16W is really an 18? When I buy clothes, they're often labeled 9/10 or 11/12, etc. I'm so foncused!
Yeah, Old Navy runs big - I always buy a size down from my normal size there.

All I had between weighing myself here and going there is one instant breakfast shake and 2 cups of coffee. Surely those don't weigh 2 whole pounds!!! omg i'm gonna be freakin' till this thing is over.

Amal- calories are different for everyone.. it's better to take into account eh weight you want to be and the height you are and then look and see how many calories you are supposed to be eating every day... and then go from that point for weight loss. At 5'4" if I wanted to be like 120lbs, I'd be down at about 1700 calories to maintain weight. If I wanted to be 110, it would be about 1500. 2000 is not a scenario for me in any regards unless I was seriously exercising.

Because that's assuming you're just maintaining. I don't think your actual weight makes a huge difference in terms of the number of calories for maintenance. You can't eat the number of calories suggested for maintaining your goal weight in order to *reach* your goal weight.

Those are maintenance levels of calories, not for weight loss. Your body burns a certain amount every day, and that doesn't vary all that much by weight. It varies a lot more by activity.
I plugged in my weight goal (drop 7 pounds) and it picked a date at the rate of one pound per week so I'd be at my goal weight by May. But it said to eat only 1600 per day, and I don't think I'd be able to keep off the weight if I dropped the calories that low.

It's pure hell on earth. I feel bad for my friend too 'cause she had the surgery sometime in august I think and since that time she's only lost 18 pounds. That's what I've lost in only a couple of months by just dieting and not going through this huge surgery and having to go back and refilling the tube thing.

You may have to religiously count your calories for a few weeks until you get a sense of what is too much or not enough. I did that and it was really interesting to see what i was eating and what was in what. Then i got to a point where I could sense if I had a 20oz soda, 6 glasses of water, a stirfry, and a salad maybe I still had 300 more calories or 400 left to make up my day... it really helped to go through that initial stage. If you look up all the ingrediants ot things you eat (if you're cooking) with the word "calories" after it (so like cauliflower calories) you can get a count off of varying websites. The other thing to watch out for are certain food ingrediants like high fructose corn syrup.
