I know we had a few posts a bit back on non-food rewards. I've been thinking about this with my 2 friends at work with whom I'm doing this stuff... I suggested we go for pedicures or whatever.. something like that. Eyebrow waxes and such. I was thinking to get acryllic nails (which I hate with a passion) so I could grow my nails out.
Olivia*
I don't get those nails but I'll do the pedicures and eyebrow waxing. Sounds like good rewards.

I drink at least 64 oz. of water a day excluding what I drink while working out. On the weekends probably significantly less though, since I'm in the habit of drinking while I work and constantly filling up my water bottle.

Thanks! So, maybe my 80 oz isn't that far off. But I just feel I should probably be drinking more.

I don't know how valid this is, but I've seen a formula suggested for the amount of water a person needs based on weight, half an ounce per day per pound the person weighs. I don't drink nearly that much, but I try to get at least 64 ounces in per day. The kidneys can't process more than a liter to a liter and a half per hour, so I try to space it out rather than "filling up" on water.

I've been drinking a lot of water lately and tonight I found out that there's an all female gym here and it's only like $20/mo so I'm gonna be checking that out inshallah! They have a pool and everything and no men allowed on the property at all.... if one is there for something they put up signs and warn you.

That's what our thread is for! encouragement! Also for counteracting the gain we got when our husbands showed up wanting to eat a ton of rice.

I want to know how Chaishai is doing-- her trip to Israel is really soon, right? In a couple of weeks?

Is it a Curves or something else? That sounds awesome. that also means you can wear something smaller in the pool... like capri leggings and a tank top or whatever to still cover the necessary parts. Also, if you wear a Tshirt or something it will create "drag" and work like a drag suit and make it harder to go through the water-- thus more exercise.
julianna
OK! So today when i came to work, I saw this girl I only see once a week and she said: "Are you losing weight? You look thinner!" Score!! I don't think 've lost any actual weight but that means the inches are coming off... somewhat...

No, it's called PureFitness for Women. They have a rule that you have to wear spandex or lycra in the pool so I'm looking for something like some capris and a baggy top made from that material but I don't know how much luck I'll have with the top.
They have free babysitting and different types of classes like water aerobics and bellydancing (which I'm really excited about biggrin.gif)
My friend is gonna take me with her as a guest to try it out inshallah and then I'm going to try to negotiate with them about the down payment because she said it's like $200 down and $20 a month and I found a coupon online to either get a free month or $100 off the downpayment but I can't afford $100 down right now either so I'm going to see if they'll waive it completely if I give them my sad story lol blush.gif

If not, could you maybe talk them into installments? Like $10/month over 10 months? Sometimes people will go for that. Are you going for a baggy long-sleeve shirt or a baggy T-shirt? Either way I'd try the men's section if you want a constant supply... ls can be harder to come by at this time of year though. LOL I didn't picture you as the bellydancing kind! I had thought salafi with a dancing is haraam slant (the most conservative Muslimah board I belong to is totally private and more or less salafi, great girls!). smile.gif Now I have a new picture in my mind!

With that in mind, I was wondering if I can get some insight from you ladies as to the effectiveness of morning work outs.

That's a good idea about the payment plan.... I'll deffinately ask them about that if they turn down my offer of letting them waive it completely for me lol
I was just thinking a baggy lycra or spandex t-shirt.... I thought maybe if I bought it several sizes too big it wouldn't be so tight and then some loose fitting lycra or spandex capris since I want to be able to swim in the pool.

Morning workouts are great in that you will start out more energized for the day. The problem with them is the motivation of getting up early and you are not properly warmed up like you would be later in the day. This can result in a greater risk of injury. Make sure if you chose to work out in the mornings you have good stretching and warm up techniques and you should be fine.

That's true. They argue against getting lessons and learing a structured dance. IMO, if you are in a private enough area and plan to use it for the right reasons-- exercise, Dh, whatever... I don't see how it really violates the letter of the ahadeeth or whatever.. but obviously I don't really know! I thought about bellydancing, but the only place by me that teaches it for low cost has a glass front and all the little boys come and stare... and my Dh hates dancing so it's not like it would be for anything but me.

Be sure to avoid white lycra/spandex shirts. Every one I have ever had becomes like glass when wet... well... not quite but the lighter colors are totally see-through. IMO I would also avoid anything as loose as goucho pants.. I had a friend who was using those in the pool and she had problems with the legs wrapping around her other leg as she tried to kick. That's all the practical advice I have! You don't want someone to jump in and have to get you or have to ditch the pants mid-pool.

Morning worlouts are more recommended because they speed up your metabolism from the start of the day which helps you burn more calories. I just have the hardest time getting up.

I did it! I can't believe that I was able to pull it off. You were right about the warm up part - there was a definite challenge at the beginning but after the first five minutes I was back into the usual groove.

I've decided to still do the strength and stretch part (CD) of the program tonight to keep the momentum.

Thanks for your impute!!!!

...ignoring the pizza...ignoring the pizza...

I've walked 9.5 miles in the last five days, still at 2 miles a day. I hate exercise with a passion when I'm not in the habit, but I've had that aerobic high the last few days. Only problem is I forget how good it feels until after the fact, so keeping the habit is really important right now. Hubby has been going with me to the park and finding a pick-up soccer game every day. He's used to playing once a week, so he's been pushing himself also the last few days. It's still in the 90s when we go out at 6:30 pm or so. Daylight workouts are not going to cut it during Ramadan, but by then, hubby will be on the night shift, so I guess for that month I'll use my Leslie Sansone tapes.

Congrats - you are doing pretty well good.gif

Walking is next on my list - need to get myself a cool pedometer and I should be out the door - too bad that I don't really live close to any park but then again Central Park is about 20min via subway so it shouldn't be that bad - my only problem - MOTIVATION to get out of the house and go at it all by myself which I hate ... I need a walking buddy crying.gif crying.gif

Exercise during ramadan? I wish I had that energy.

I must start walking. The Couch to 5K didn't work so well for me. (nobody chasing me...no need to run wink.gif ) So I am going to drive the car like one mile...then I know if I walk to that point and back, I will have 2 miles. Is that a good goal..2 miles?

Any advice here would be appreciated. smile.gif

I don't know if I will have that energy. unsure.gif Didn't exercise during Ramadan the last two years. I'm just terrified of losing my momentum this time. I'm also going to have to be extra careful about eating too much in the evening.

What you described is a great way to lay out a walking course. I've tried walking a 1/4-mile track, and it seems SO much longer than walking in the park because of the monotony. Two miles and dieting is working well for me so far, but I have a great deal to lose (ticker is just the beginning). My heart rate is at the upper end of my target range. Once I'm in better shape and my heart rate starts dropping, I'll add a little distance at a time. I want to run eventually, but my knees can't take it at my current weight. A few years ago, I walked three miles every day, rain or shine, and the pounds fell off. I hardly had to think about what I ate, although I didn't go overboard. I want to reach the point where I'm walking (and eventually jogging) three miles a day. My dad has kept the weight off for a couple of decades that way (walking, that is).
Jenn!
Kind of not cool, all the food pics - some people really are taking this seriously. JMHO of course.
