i sent off my I-751 docs yesterday using USPS overnight mail. but when i tried the online tracking it says: notice left, and 2nd attempt to deliver if unsuccessful they will hold it for 5 business days and then return to sender???????????? what the??

This is a very common post, the USPS is just indicating that the mail arrived at the PO Box AFTER USCIS has picked up the mail for the day, check again next Monday or Wednesday considering the holiday.
