Justin
Hi all,

I am starting the process to sponsor my parents to come over to the US. I want to know what the process is and will be. What visa do I file for? How it is transisioned onto a greencard? What supporting documents are needed? What is the timeline?

Might be a good idea to read through the guides, then see what other questions you have.

Also one of our friends in the Canada forum is going through that process - check his posts. His name is IR5FORUM something else....
Justin
Is there not a step-by-step guide for bringing your family/parents into the US?
*Len*
Sh!te - I think there's no guide for an IR5 scenario. Sorry. Uh-oh blink.gif .... wonder if you could sneak in the Canada forum and lookup our member IR5FORUMSIE since he is about to finish that process of bringing his parents to the US.

Hi Justin,

I just went to the UK to bring my Mum over to live with us. It was a pretty painless process when I look back on it. From start to finish, it took about 9 months.

Good luck

The process of bringing family members in is the same process for bringing a spouse in. You ARE a US citizen, right?
Justin
Yes, I am a US citizen. So what are the forms to be filed and supported documentation?

File an I130 petition for them. Look at the "example forms" and you will see one. I filed for my wife, you would check "parent" instead of "spouse", otherwise it's the same process. Look at the guide for the IR1 petition process and you'll find a step-by-step for what you want to do.

Documentation will vary depending on whether it is for a mother, father, stepmother, or stepfather.

Read the instructions on Form I-130---the process starts there.
