Ok, although I am in Arizona, its 49 F outside and falling, and some moron who painted this apartment, painted over the thermostat lettering. I tried looking at various thermostat retailers for the info I am looking for, but its an older, less efficient model than what is on the market, so I can't find instructions.

It's a rectangular shape with a lever that runs along the bottom which I know is the temp setting; however, there are levers on each side and each has 3 settings. Now, I remember from experience that one side is heat, off, cool and the other is fan auto, off, on. But, which side is which?? I need heat. I just sit and shiver under the covers. crying.gif

What's the name of the model?
Delicia
No idea, all the lettering is gone, hence my problem.

can you try going over the outside with paint thinner to remove the paint? Or if the paint isn't very thick, what about taking a piece of paper, laying it over top, then using the flat side of a pencil role back and forth over where any impressions of the lettering might be and see if you can lift an impression?

The other thing to try would be trial and error going through each combination one by one and seeing which one produces heat. Good luck. In the meantime, get yourself a hot water bottle and then walk around the house carrying it filled with hot water. (That's what I used to do back in Canada and here when the temperature gets cool - we haven't turned the furnace on either yet and we have had some below freezing nights.}

Hrm. I'm going to be of no help then. (We have old fashioned radiators.)
Delicia
Ok, I was going to scrape the paint off with my fingernails or a steak knife (which is all about I have available) when I figured out that there is no lettering at all, painted over or otherwise, on this stupid thing. *sigh* so i popped the cover off and it says Honeywell LR1620 on the inside of the cover. But, I still cant find which side is heat and which is fan by googling this model number....

This is so silly. Good thing I am not in the maritimes, eh?
Delicia
I wonder if USCIS would consider expediting my husband's IR-1 so that he can come here and help his ditzy blonde wife from freezing to death in the desert?

I have a Honeywell thermostat. On mine,

The left hand side is Fan: Auto, ON; and the right hand side is: Cool, Off, Heat.

Not guaranteeing that your thermostat is like mine....... but....... the brands are the same.........

If you go with experimenting, if the heat hasn't been on in a while, it should smell like gas and stink for a while. If you accidentally got the A/C going, it'll probably make a lot of noise. laughing.gif At my house, anyway. smile.gif

Here's a lot of pictures of Honeywell thermostats. Maybe one of them is yours?

I think djc has it right. I got it blowing now and I love the smell of a freshly ignited furnace in the evening.

And 22 pages of thermostats, and didn't see mine in any of them sad.gif

Thanks for your help. My fingers and toes will be grateful soon!

You're welcome! smile.gif

Now that you're toasty, I can make fun of ya. 49F? Tropical! It is sleeting ice around here....... ohmy.gif

So glad to hear you got it working. If there's one thing I hate, it's the cold. Click to view attachment

I won't make fun of you for being cold. I know I have acclimatized to the weather here in Louisiana and I feel the cold and shiver when the temperature drops. It isn't Canadian winter by any means, but it is cold for here.

I was in Vegas over the weekend and I was surprised how chilly it was- I did love the dry air though. I miss that. It was nice to curl my hair and actually have the curls stay. smile.gif

You can make fun of me... I grew up and lived most my life in Minnesota, lived in Toronto a couple years, and I was freezing last nite! I couldn't believe it...

Don't know if you're thinking about it yet or if its even beneficial to have one in AZ, but if your thinking about replacing the thermostat, get one of the programable ones. They are easy to install just make sure you first label the wires and switch the wires from the old stat to the new stat one wire at a time. Turn the power off the power to your house before you do this.

I think we grow to expect certain things out of our surroundings and if they don't match, our brains have a fit. I think part of it's boredom. I remember going to see a Buffalo Bills game in Orchard Park in late October and I was wearing a parka and it was freezing. The temperature couldn't have been less than 1 or 2 Celsius but those of us who weren't drunk (it was Budweiser day) were freezing. I've been out in much worse weather (ice fishing without a hut) but I was freezing that day. The Bills were beating the Lions handily so maybe that had something to do with it. Before they built the Metrodome, I used to see Vikings games on TV and the temperature was always minus a bazillion degrees (Farenheit laughing.gif ) and there were people in the stands at the Met cheering them on. Feeling cold, I guess is just a state of mind.

Our humid cold can't be underestimated. It doesn't get cold often, but it's always humid and makes it feel much colder. But it's about 75 degrees now, so we can't complain.

When we can't get our furnace going we just break the chairs up (or whatever is handy) and start a camp fire.
