So yesterday driving back from writing my final exam, i stopped in at the liquor store (LB for us Sk people) to get my brother in law a xmas present. Hand the cashier my drivers license, the machine rejects it!! Turns out my drivers license expired back in Nov, ooops!! I forgot the VA DMV only issued it as long as I had paperwork I had paperwork to prove I was here legally (so for nearly 2 yrs the first time, and only 1 yr the last visit, since I didnt have the 10 yr greencard yet, just the 1 yr extension letter) So it was off to the DMV. Everything was going along well, just had to show permanent card for ID, THEN she notices my drivers license expired last month, and she then states I have to redo my testing (which I never even had to do in the first place) as well I would loose my motorcycle endorsement!! UGHH!! She had to get a supervisor to confirm all of this, and at first the supervisor said, yep, got to retest!! Then they stated since it had only expired recently, it was all ok--no testing and keep motor cycle endorsement, whewwww. All turned out well in the end. I asked if they normally send out letters stating ur license is about to expire, and they said yes, so no clue why I never received one!

I am amazed that the VDPS did that. Happy, but very surprised! the way they charge for speeding, I figure they were going to make you take every test they could. Good for you!

Hello Flames,
Thankfully it all turned out okay...due to some luck shining down on you.
Certainly retesting for something you have already proven you can do is a mistake on their part.

ya it seemed silly that one would have to retest just for not renewing on time, but anything can happen when dealing with a govt agency! lol She said if I had come in later (jan 2008) I would have had to redo it all for sure!! Dont have to worry about ti for another 5 yrs

Phew. That was a lucky escape! They don't send out renewal notices here (Fla) so I've got to remember to do this myself. Yeesh. Immigration. Who needs it. lol

Silly Scott! Derek and I were just at the DMV ourselves renewing his license with his 751 letter. I was braced for the worse and....nothing bad happened. They didn't even blink an eye, renewed his license for another year and we were out within an hour. Of course we have to back next year and do it all over again, sigh.
As for a renewal notice, I don't remember getting one when mine expired last year so I wonder how often they actually go out.
Quite honestly I don't really understand why they don't accept expired licenses for things like the ABC Store, etc. I mean it's not like you have gotten any younger!

liquor stores in VA have machines that read DL's? fancy. Albuquerque liquor stores just have surly people who look at my WY license and ask if it's a state in the US-which is exactly the same question that they asked when I used to hand them my Alberta license.
actually, I let my license expire a few years ago when I was still living in WY because I was in such a small town that I knew all the bartenders and the clerks at the one grocery store-they only carded people that "weren't from round here". Anyway, walked into the DMV when I finally got a chance to head to the big city-she looked at my 6 month expired DL and said no problem because it wasn't "very expired". I'd practiced parallel parking for nothing. oh well, WY licenses are good for 8 years and I can renew by mail till I'm 60 or 65.

Was at an ABC liquor store! A customer before me was in his 50's or 60's but had no ID, and the cashier would not see to him!!! ouch!!
Once I was denied buying a lottery ticket in Victoria because I didn't have any ID! Think I was 25 at the time, and one had to be 19,lol

last year, before i got my wy license back, i was denied cold medicine. my AB license was good enough to allow me to by a fifth of whisky-which did help the cold-but not anything with pseudoephedrine.
