A Peoria man was arrested after what authorities described Thursday as a reckless exchange of gunfire with a man who broke into his home.

One of the rounds blasted through the wall of a house across the street, endangering four adults and three children inside the home, police said.

The shooting suspect, Luis H. Olivas Jr., 24, admitted that he fired through a bedroom window with closed curtains, said Mike Tellef, a Peoria police spokesman.

"Luis admitted that he could not see out of the house and had no idea where the rounds were going," Tellef said.

The gunfire erupted early Sunday after an intruder broke through a front window at Olivas' home in the 7100 block of West Hatcher Road, he said.

When confronted by Olivas, the intruder began firing at the homeowner, Tellef said. Olivas retrieved a weapon and returned the fire, he added.

The intruder fled and has not been caught, Tellef said.

During a search of Olivas' home, investigators seized 170 pounds of marijuana, and other contraband, Tellef added.

Olivas was arrested Sunday and booked in a Maricopa County jail on seven counts of endangerment, possession of marijuana for sale and misconduct involving weapons.

Shooting at a bedroom window is defending oneself? Is it okay to defend oneself at the expense of other's safety?

Happens all the time with officer-involved shootings. The rules say to always be aware of what is in the path of the bullet. But in the real world when your life is threatened, you don't always have the luxury of getting in the perfect position to fire, and if you can't get into such a position, you aren't required to lay down your life.

As for shooting at the window, though, I don't get what was going on there. Was the intruder back outside? And if so, was he still shooting? If not, shooting at the window was a definite no-no.

What we need are effective, non-lethal ways of neutralizing a threat like this. I'm sure they exist.

Like what? I mean something effective, something that'll drop a man cold but not kill him. None of that tear gas "i'll make you cry" #######.

I remember reading about a woman in Chicago around Christmas, accidentally shot her 5 yr. old nephew when she woke to the sound of her Christmas Tree rustling. When she demanded the perpetrator to identify themselves and got no reply, she fired away into the darkness.

Dogs are great security guards - most know the difference between an intruder and a 5 yr. old relative, and they are effective in deterring someone trying to break in.
