Social Security Card

Hello all, 

 

     My wife received her 2 year with conditions GC in the mail today and I want to thank each and everyone of you who have helped us through the process from the start of the K1 up to this point.  My questions has to do with her Social Security Card.   Shortly after she arrived in the US, we went to the SSA Office and applied for her SSN.  When she received it, the card says "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION".   Now that she has her GC, is she required or can she apply for a new card without that phrase on the card?   We aren't sure if this can only be removed after she becomes a US Citizen.  Any insight on this issue is greatly appreciated.   Thank you all

now that she has a GC you can go in to have a new card send to her that doesn't say this.

She can bring her green card to SSA and remove the restriction, but it's not required. I've had the same SS card with that restriction statement for a while, and I plan on changing it after I naturalize. I'm just too lazy. However, this has never caused any issue with my employment.

It shouldn't cause a conflict but a new one can be issued.

You can have the  SSC that says "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization"  removed after she receives it if you want. All you have to do is submit your documents for AOS, EAD and AP using your last name once you get your copy of Marriage Certificate.  Since she received her GC you'll just have to resubmit the SSC application to change her last name and to change the status of the current SSC to remove the "Valid for work....".

My experience was a bit different, as in a lot less complicated. I came to the Social Security office (Pasadena, CA), and when my number is called I explained that I would like to have a new SSC without the DHS statement. The officer asked for my passport, valid green card and she did some typing on her computer and asked me to check if my name is printed correctly (I didn't change my name after my marriage) and that's it, she gave me the notice and 4 days later the new SSC arrived by mail.
