Hi,

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I came back from Greece yesterday with an extension letter and decided to ask the immigration officer himself about it. Since the expiration date of my letter is in 15 days he made a comment saying "you barely made it", then I asked him is it by the card or letter, then he said letter at first, BUT then there was a senior immigration officer standing right behind him, who corrected him saying " what are you saying it has always been the card" so guys there it is right from the horses mouth, expiration date on your letter is the expiration date of your card!

I think everyone on this list needs to know this, and be able to stand up for yourself.  Unfortunately there are a few on the list who keep insisting it's the letter not the card.

It's the card, people.

Good luck to everyone - wherever you are in the process!

Thank you so much for this useful and valuable information. I was one person who has been challenged by many people on the forum who have swayed the facts.

I've heard both directly from immigration officers at POE and at InfoPass appointments, multiple times. This means nothing. There is no official USCIS guideline, it is not clear and they have made no effort to officially clarify it.

You yourself heard conflicting information from two officers in your story. How does this settle anything?

Incorrect. The I-797 letter has just been re-worded and is now crystal clear.

There is also official guidance in the CBP Carrier Information Guide:

It's a year from the expiry date on the card, folks.

I hadn't seen the new letter yet, but it looks like they finally got their act together. I stand corrected.

If your letter has the new wording, there's really no argument.

My letter doesn't have the new wording, but it sounds like August 2017 filers are receiving the revised letter. It's about time USCIS fixed this! :-)

Oh perhaps a  USCIS spy in our midst, listening to our discussions. Well spy, how about processing applications in a timely manner, say 6 months?:)  Then we can get on with going about our daily lives and not having to worry about travelling, working and driving and all the headaches that causes us when our applications are collecting dust in some warehouse or whatever they collect dust in!

Removal of Conditions..  TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK

Time to reset the tick tock clock again.   Roll my eyes.

In the old wording, the key word was "status".  Your legal "status" is on the books as your green card date.  Therefore, when your "status" is extended for a period of one year, your card date is used.

For some reason, both VJ members and some officers appended the ghost language of "from the date of this letter" on to the end of the sentence "status is extended for a period of one year".

I'm glad they have clarified the sentence now, but honestly, the confusion and brouhaha were terrible!

I heard conflicting information, this might sound scary, but my immigration officer was pretty naive about stuff. He broke all my apprehensions of what immigration officers can actually see on their screens!!!

My letter is from 2016 and there is no new wording. Well looks like the debate has been settled as they have come up with revised wordings. The reason I posted it is because the senior immigration officer had her *&^% together! Hope this settles it!
