As a sponsor, what if my taxes show income above 125% but my employment letter doesn't?

Title says it all. I'm looking to serve as a sponsor for a friend of mine to get her green card and while I make over 125% of the poverty level for a family of two, my current work is seasonal and temporary and I start grad school soon. I figured last years tax receipts would handle this but I also need to submit that employment letter.

Will my sponsorship be turned down if the numbers don't match? IE. I make $45,000 a year according to tax receipts but my employer letter says that I only make $10,000 at my current place of work.

Thanks for all the help guys!

~Kevin

P.S. Apologies if this was already asked, I couldn't find it =/

Last year's tax transcript or number will not help you. What matters on an affidavit of support is your current income and you need to be able to prove it with a letter from your employer and/or your pay stubs.

$10,000 doesn't even cover your household according to the current poverty guideline: https://www.uscis.gov/i-864p.

Your friend probably needs another sponsor on top of you.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

They're unlikely to look only at tax returns to determine the income of a wage earner. Pay stubs and the employment letter are likely to be looked at in most cases (i.e. not self-employed).

What do you actually expect to earn this year? I'm not looking for a hard number, but does it meet the required income level? If so, why the huge discrepancy? What do your pay stubs indicate in terms of income?

To quote a famous movie line "There can be...only ONE!". :) There would be no point having a joint sponsor that doesn't meet the requirements since you can't combine incomes across sponsors (except with I-864A agreements with a sponsor).

Thanks guys, that's what I thought but I needed some affirmation. As it stands I work a number of jobs over the course of the year that puts me far and away above the threshold according to the IRS. That being said, paystubs for the summer portion of work are not going to be sufficient. Going to have to tell her to get a new sponsor.

Thanks again!
