How soon will we get SSN after entering the USA?

Hi guys,

 

So we have our interview for IR1 in 3 weeks and my wife and I will arrive to the USA in a month from now. My question is this: how soon will we know her social security number? I mean not a physical card (I know it may take a few weeks), but its number? I remember I read somewhere that we can call them up and just ask over the phone, is that true? When will it be available after she entered the USA?

September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

No, you can't call and just get the SSN. Over the phone, how would they know they're giving the SSN to your wife and not just anybody? 

 

She'll get her SSN within two weeks.

Dec 16th 2015 - Medical exam


Dec 21st 2015 - Interview


Dec 21st 2015 - 221(g) issued at interview for updated forms


Jan 13th 2016 - Mailed our reply to the 221(g) to the US Embassy, received and CEAC updated the next morning


Jan 20th 2016 - Embassy require more in-depth info on asset for i-864


Feb 1st 2016 - Sent more in-depth info on assets as requested. Received the next morning


Feb 16th 2016 - Visa has been issued :dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :dancing:



In the US


April 5th 2016 - POE Newark. No questions asked.


April 14th 2016 - SSN received


May 10th 2016 - First day at my new job :dancing:


May 27th 2016 - Green Card received


June 7th 2016 - Got my Texas driver's license

She'll get her SSN within two weeks. 

So there's no way to know her SSN but only wait for the card to come? What if the card got lost or takes longer? How can she apply for work, open bank account, etc?

08/16/19: sent I-751 packet to USCIS Lockbox in Dallas

08/19/19: packet received by USCIS

08/21/19: received text message with case number ( Texas Service Center)

08/23/19: check got chashed

08/26/19: received extension letter in the mail

11/14/19: Biometrics appointment

04/28/20: case got transferred to my local field office in Atlanta

05/28/20: New Card Is Being Produced

05/29/20: New Card Got Approved

06/02/20: We Mailed Your New Card

06/03/20: The Post Office Picked Up Your New Card

06/04/20: Card Was Delivered To Me By The Post Office

Can't we just go to the SSA office and get the number by showing her passport?

 

Why do we need to wait for the CG to arrive for her to start working? I thought that the I 551 stamp in her passport is a proof that she's waiting for her GC to come and is valid for 1 year since the date she entered the USA.

She can use the I-551 stamp in her passport until her card is in the mail.

You cannot just go to your SSA, show the passport and get a number. That's not how it works.

The Social Security Administration will either send her her SSN via mail or you might have to go to a Social Security Office and your wife needs to apply for a SSN herself.

CBP is no longer placing I-551 stamps in passports.  Instead they place a standard entry stamp next to the visa itself and it is that combination that acts as a temporary green card.

We marked the box for Social Security card on the DS-260.  My wife entered the US on July 22, 2017.  She received her Social Security card in the mail 11 days later.  Less than 2 weeks after that, her Green Card arrived.

November 10, 2022: Received "Interview is scheduled" letter.

December 12, 2022:  Received email from Dallas office informing me (spouse) to be there for combo interview.

December 14, 2022: Combo Interview for I-751 and N-400 Conducted.

January 26, 2023: Wife's Oath Ceremony completed at the Plano Event Center, Plano, Texas!!!😁

February 6, 2023: Wife's Passport Application submitted in Dallas, Texas.

March 21, 2023:   Wife's Passport Delivered!!!!

May 15, 2023 (about):  Naturalization Certificate returned from Passport agency!!

 

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..
