Point in getting Global Entry when airport has kiosks for everyone?

Does anyone know if there is any point in joining the global entry program when your airport (in my case Dulles) has passport kiosks for people with ESTA and green cards? I've heard that if you have global entry and you need to speak to an officer you get to go in front of everyone in line, is this true? Because that would probably be the only benefit. Otherwise if you don't have to speak to an officer there's really not a difference between the global entry and the kiosk for Esta/Green Card.

I have Global entry, I re enter through Dulles usually late evenings. I don't speak to no one go to the kiosks takes about 3 minutes to clear with no line or waiting. I have never stood in the regular line. It is well worth if for me as It also clears me through exit after getting my luggage through the global entry lane. I will probably go through the line next time I come back to bring my fiance` home with me. I was told to ask the TSA or boarder control agent giving directions and tell my situation and I would be directed.

Same here. I have had Global entry for a while.

Entered the US through JFK, Newark, Philly, Atlanta, San Diego.

Sometimes I use a kiosk and not have to speak to an officer. Other times it was a 10 second stop at an officers counter. Another benefit is that you can get TSA Precheck with it. So even on domestic flights you pass through security a lot faster. My wife gets TSA precheck through me whenever we travel together. She lives it.

When I got global entry it was $100 for 5 years. That works out to $20 a year. My job paid for mine but it is still well worth it in my opinion.

Thank you guys for your awesome replies! I have a follow up question... A lot of times when I go home to Sweden I bring back food items such as chocolate etc which I declare when I come back and therefore I of course have to talk to an officer. How does this work when I have global entry?

I usually bring a few items with me from Canada when I go down with my nexus (trail mix, some candy they like, and ground coffee). Depending on the type of food they will just ask you to explain what you're bringing and then stamp you through. I've only ever had to go to secondary with food items when coming back into Canada, but even then it's usually a very brief talk with the agent. You're basically a pre-cleared trusted traveller on that program, so you go through a bit less scrutiny when coming through. I find it's more helpful at security as they usually have a global entry/nexus line just for us, so it's quite a bit faster.

I've ticked yes to the food items on the customs form coming back through global entry, maybe 2 seconds for them to ask what type of food then I'm waved on.

My usual international airport (SFO) now even has a separate line for global entry exiting from the baggage hall so there's yet another line that's shorter - there definitely seems to be shorter scrutiny on the customs forms in this line.

I totally love this program and think it's an absolute bargain! We probably only travel out the US 1-2x a year but fly internally a fair amount and the TSA precheck angle has saved us a lot of time too.

Sounds like I am definitively getting Global Entry! How long did it take to get an interview? I have heard that it takes a while. I have to send in my ROC papers in December, when I get a new Green Card I just have to inform them right, I don't need a new interview?

Depends on your airport, I think it's usually a few months.

Re updating the document we were told you don't need an interview as such but you have to go in person as they swipe the document through a reader to update.

With most airports, new appointments open up pretty often as people cancel and reschedule. I did it last year and I checked back every 10 minutes or so one morning, I was able to get a weekend appt at Dulles for two weeks later. I could have gotten sooner, but it was on a workday.

Also, global entry saved my butt twice at Dulles, when customs and immigration had multi-hour lines. Meanwhile, the global entry line was completely empty. I just walked up to the kiosk, walked up to the customs agent and done. In and out in a matter of minutes. Heck I waited easily twenty minutes just to get my damn luggage, then the rest of my flight had to wait for over two hours to make it to the outside. While I more or less just rolled on out (other than telling the agent  that the food I declared was jam).

I haven't gotten around to applying yet. Been forgetting plus I have been busy. But I might try to get it before Christmas since I know I will be travelling to Europe.
