SSN before getting hitched???

Is SSN required to get married in the states, specifically Florida??

You should be able to do it without one. Google the county where you're getting married at and they should have a list of documents needed, that way you can make sure you have everything you need

Thanks! I just googled and found this so it seems its required..

 

Florida Marriage License

Every marriage license is issued by a county court judge or clerk of the circuit court under his or her hand and seal. Marriage licenses are issued by counties and you can apply for your license at any county clerk's. Click Here for Clerk of the Court contact information by county. You can get married in any county in Florida, regardless of where you obtained your marriage license. To obtain a marriage license you need:

• Identification: a picture ID such as a driver's license, state ID card, or valid passport; both parties will also have to provide their Social Security numbers, but do not need to provide their Social Security Cards.

No US state requires you to have an SSN in order to obtain a marriage licence, but if you do have one you're obligated by federal law to provide it when you apply.

Have the USC call the county clerk and ask him/her how to get married to a foreigner in the US who doesn't have a SSN. Most often you're only required to give your SSN if you actually have one.

Ahhh ok. Phew. 

 

So they will be OK with my Australian Passport for proof of ID? Are there any other documents I should take?

For aliens, just your valid foreign passport should suffice.

Also, do you know if im going to run into problems with getting my SSN in my married name? Ive just read a few posts that say i should be get it first but we plan to get married right away.

It depends on the SSA office you visit. 

 

Some will have no problem issuing you a social security card in your married name; others will insist that it needs to be in your maiden name until you have a green card or EAD showing your married name on it.

It should not be a problem at all if you get a SSN in your married name. The majority of people just try and get it as soon as possible and then change the name on it after you get married.

I married in Fort Lauderdale and all I needed was my Argentina passport. When you go to request the license they will tell you all what you need to bring.

Shouldn't doesn't mean it won't be. It's a quite common issue here on VJ with SSO not letting someone get it in their married until the EAD - it isn't right but it happens, and this is why most ppl on VJ advise to get it first and then change it. Not because most ppl do it that way, but to avoid the potential problem.

I wrote this reply to ensure folks are aware that SSA name change denials are a real thing. K1 visa holders shouldn't necessarily expect to be approved...even with a marriage certificate!
