I'm freaking out! Traveling with a green card

Hey. I'm in need of a little reassurance please! So Noom has his green card now, and we are leaving for Thailand in the morning. It is our first trip outside the US since he arrived last October. I'm a nervous wreck that I don't have everything we need to ensure he can re-enter. I keep having horrible visions of having to leave him behind because I did something stupid. All documentation we need is passport, green card, and marriage license, correct? Is there anything else I should haul with us? Thanks so much.

Does the name on his passport not match the name on his green card? That's the only reason why you would need a marriage certificate (proof of name change). Otherwise, just passport and green card.

 

We traveled outside the country for the first time post-GC last month. I was a bit nervous but of course everything was fine. There's really nothing for you to worry about. Have a lovely time in Thailand!

Passport and green card alone are fine.  I travelled with just those to reenter.  Unless his name is different on green card and passport there is no need to travel with the marriage certificate.

 

My Journey

Priority Date: July 24, 2007 (EAC)

AOS fee paid: February 2013

Request embassy change: May 2013

Son born: September 2013 (added to petition March 2014)

Interview: March 17, 2015 (Joint sponsor needed)

Joint sponsor documents submitted: April 27, 2015

Visas approved and issued: April 30, 2015. Had to return to embassy to do oath for son :)

Visa in hand: May 5, 2015 (two working days after issued)

IV fees paid: August 10, 2015

POE: JFK - September 10, 2015 (one day before visa expiry date - No hassle)

Returned to Barbados: September 28, 2015

Green cards: October 5, 2015 :dancing:

Entered US permanently: March 22, 2016

Applied for SSNs: March 28, 2016 (didn't tick box on DS-260)

SSN received: April 4, 2016;

Learner's permit: April 7, 2016 (in NY you also have to do 5-hour class);

Driver's License: July 13, 2016 (on first try) :dancing:

Married: September 2015

I-130 sent: October 8, 2015 (via USPS)

Priority date: October 9, 2015 (WAC)

Petition approved: March 8, 2016 (5 months to the date of receipt) :)

Don't be so nervous because you will be fine. As long as he has his passport and green card then he will be fine. So stop worrying.

My husband and I have traveled several times - just his passport and his green card are needed! :) 

 

I was nervous the first time, too (understandable!), but you shouldn't have any issues.

I certainly understand nervousness before a big trip.  You should be fine with the passport and GC.  The marriage certificate would only come into play if the name on his passport does not match the name on his GC.  My wife and I have traveled outside the US several times both with her GC and now with the expired GC and extension letter and have had no issues.  Her passport still has her maiden name on it so we carry the marriage certificate, but so far no one has asked to see it.

 

Relax a little and enjoy your trip!

I re-entered the US yesterday after traveling to Canada. I just gave the officer my Passport & GC and although the last names don't match, he didn't ask to see my marriage certificate. I did bring it just incase though.

Please help !

I read some of the topics made me nourvous :(I am 10 years green card holder of the usa.I am now in Australia and going back to Seattle this Saturday. Here is my question. I checked out In Seattle airport with my australian passport to Australia for my holiday.(I read that you must exit and entry with an america green card)Would it affect  my return with my green card ?This is my first time leaving out of the state :(Thank you !!!

We had the same experience...green card and passport only and even though names don't match no request for the marriage certificate.
