Hello, everyone!

I am so confused and freaking out over this! My husband and I are filing for i-130 from Australia and we sent our petition to the Chicago lockbox around March 15, 2017. We received a receipt notice on March 20, 2017 via email and April 5, 2017 via snail mail. It said that our case would be forwarded to the Nebraska Service Center, however, everyone is saying that the case is usually forwarded to NVC. I'm not sure if the case is going to be forwarded to the NVC later on or what exactly is going to happen... May someone please explain?

Cases first go to one of the USCIS (service centers).  In a few months, it will then be forwarded to NVC. There is always a possibility that your case could be transferred from Nebraska to another service center before moving to NVC.

Make sure you fill in the dates on your VJ timeline.  It will then calculate an ESTIMATED approval date.

First the petotoon has to be approved by the USCIS at one of its service centers (California, Texas, Nebraska, Potomac or occasionally Vermont). After some months the petition will (hopefully) be approved and only then will the case be forwarded to the NVC for visa processing. USCIS handles the petition, NVC handles the visa application. It's a two-part process before the embassy gets involved.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

Thank you so much, I thought I did something wrong! I filled in the dates on my timeline and my estimated approval date is sometime in October.

  • 2 weeks later...

Im going through the same process but from NZ. Filing date of a month earlier than you (mid feb 2017). We have been sent to Nebraska as well.

Others have probably covered it but Nebraska do their processing first then it goes to the NVC for further processing. From what I can see in the VJ timelines it will be October before Nebraska even look at your petition.(September for me)

I've attached a flowchart that I put together for myself. It may help you. This is NOT legal advice and is only my learning so far. If you are unsure go to a Lawyer and stuff. Happy for feedback if I have anything wrong.
