Draft while green card pending?

Hello!

I got a letter on May 4th that the Swedish draft is calling me in for their training...however it says on their website "a swedish citizen living abroad DO NOT have to fill out the questionnaire" give or take the wording.

To me this feels like it would void my green card, as they say I still have to fill it out on the phone. I'm still waiting for my interview. If I get chosen for the draft after filling it out, then there's a chance they'll call me in for their practice and training...Meaning I will have to leave for almost a year. This would definitely make me ineligible for a green card, correct? And if I were to fill out the questionnaire, would that make me eligible for my green card as well?

You won't be called in if you don't want to do "lumpen", you simply fill in the questionnaire and let them know you're not interested. Everyone who turns 18 in 2017 will get that letter, but only very few will actually do "lumpen", they will pick those who fit the description and who WANT to do it.

It's completely voluntary in Sweden. Just follow Scandi's advise and you'll be fine :)

It's formally not voluntary which is why the website would probably say it in that way. In practice, if you don't want to do it you will be deemed "mentally unfit" for it. Expressen sums it up a bit here.  http://www.expressen.se/nyheter/sa-kommer-nya-varnplikten-fungera/

Wow, okay. Thank you so much! This really calmed my nerves. I'm scared but I feel so much better now :)

They only have a few thousand spots and they want to fill them with people who actually want to be there, it's highly unlikely they will force anyone to do it even if they in theory could.

 

When you answer the questions you can also make yourself out to be physically unfit, let them know you have issues of some kind and so on, even if it's not true. That will also help not looking very desirable to them.
