that letter is like your authorization to get back in the country. not my personal experience but i've had friends that have gone out of the country and when they came back they showed their expired GC plus the extension letter and have had no problems getting back in.

just be sure to not go to any of the banned countries!

Just a heads up - when you come back into the US, you MAY be taken to "secondary screening" so that your letter and Green Card can be inspected more carefully.  My spouse is in her 60s, and from Australia.  Lots of "low risk" criteria.  But she still got taken to Secondary at JFK when we entered the country just before Christmas.

Don't panic if this happens.

Went to UK back in November. No problems leaving. Check-in staff were fine with the extension letter once I pointed out the relevant section. I took the original (+copy in my bag and on my phone) and my expired GC. No problem at US immigration here in SF. Going again next month by which time I will either have my GC or will be applying for citizenship at this rate.

With all those ,, Trump things'', my advice is to postpone your travel just as a precaution measure...You should have no problems returning into US but... you never know, better safe than sorry.

lots of fellow Romanians I keep in touch with have traveled with an extension letter, with no issue whatsoever.

I am in the same situation, just received my extension letter and planning to travel in August.
Like someone else here says, you may be taken into secondary - it's inconvenient, but oh well. Happened to me 2 years ago when I was returning  to the US while on AP.
