We still have a while to wait but I was wondering what people did about schooling. It's completely different than america. My fiance from the UK says he finished secondary school but dosnt even have papers showing this. Is he going to need to get his GED?

Any input would be appreciated. We still arnt for sure what he will do for work here. He drives a lorry in England and does Road work. So hopefully something similar.

GCSE's are the exams you do at 16. Going to school does not produce anything.

You might want to check the New Life in the US and Working in the US forums, some others may have insight!

If he wants to be a driver he will most likely need to get a Class A license, which can be expensive, but i think he'll find one of those jobs easily.

GCSE certificates and A-Level certificates if he has them. The most important thing is GCSEs.

(I moved from the UK to US educational system at 18)

He should have some sort of records from his GSCE or A level if he took them. If he knows how to drive he can convert his license easily in America to drive cars, but for trucks he'll need a different license and will have to go through the cost and training to get it. If it's big trucks, some trucking companies are eager enough to hire individuals and give them training through CDL certification. For road work, there are always companies looking for flaggers as a starting point.

I don't know how it is where you are, but around Spring time the roadwork people here will hire anyone who seems a good fit and then there is a lot of work through fall with some overtime. Then, once winter hits, no work. It is a hard career to keep to as you get older, but primarily, I'd be worried about the amount of time in the much stronger American sun. Aiming towards driving trucks would definitely be better. I know some community colleges have truck driving courses which might be helpful in familiarizing himself with American laws and differences (and practice driving on the other side).

Depending on where he is trucking over here, he might not be used to being away for long periods of time. My dad was a trucker and used to go all the way to Russia and Greece. He was gone for 3 weeks, home for 1, gone for 3 weeks, home for 1. But had he been driving just within the country he wouldn't have been gone for very long.

The long periods on the road caused my parents' marriage to fail. Not saying it will happen to everyone. But it can be a huge strain and it can be a very lonely existence.

Thanks for everyone's insight. And you are right with the crazy long driving hours. I don't think that's something he wants to do. But we will look around. He even thought about going back to school for electrical, but I'm not sure if he'll need his GED for that.

If he does need his GED it is super easy. My husband had a 9/10th grade education coming out of Denmark and had no problems with it. He needed it to do plumbing.
