This law has been a disaster for American poor and hasn't done anything to reduce extreme poverty, quite the opposite happened. I love how the act helps poor fathers earning less than $6,000 a year, by locking them up, because shockingly they don't have any money, and forces single mothers to work for welfare, doing all kinds of low paid jobs that essentially trap them in poverty or even in many cases causes to force them off welfare, which makes the law look successful, while abandoning the mother and her children.

Muslims?

Welfare of any consequence can only exist in wealthy cohesive Countries.

So no. I think Saudi has a large welfare system but obviously at the mercy of oil.

I cant remember who signed welfare reform into law but I think he did an intern in his office, and his wife blamed it on a right wing conspiracy

True welfare reform is being employed at a decent job ..... That is why we need trump . The left wants to shut down coal that pay $60-70,000 per year .. Shut down fracking .. Shut down the pipeline project... Shut down the ports that would move coal to China ... Send the undocumented democrats back across the border .. freeing up millions of jobs .. .

Yeah, but you aren't going to cohesive without some form of wealth distribution. Also, the British welfare state was created at a time when the UK wasn't particularly well off. I'm sure you as a Welsh man can understand how Wales would have been in a world of hurt, if were not for social welfare payments to unemployed miners, thanks Margaret Thatcher choosing to destroy the industry out of pure spite.

My Grandfather was a coal miner. I also remeber the 3 day week.

You could say it was a gre Global Warming action.

Different times, even 40 years ago my Grandparents who were of the view you only called upon it and NHS when you needed it changed their view because of the number of spongers taking advantage,

In the intervieening years it has become much more significant.

2 intersting articles in Politico.eu One was about Luton and the welfare state and the other about the issue with Brexit and Farmers getting help to bring the harvest in, basically can not be done without East Europeans.

Never was a problem but now is, obviously unsustainable.

An assaultive post has been removed. Please belay the personal insults.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I don't buy it. I think they say people who they thought they could look their noses at, to make them feel better about their lives. Common enough story. It is like my English grandmother who was a complete snob, but funnily enough car from a relatively poor background herself.

In the intervieening years it has become much more significant.

You remind me of my dad. 'The youth of today', was one of his favorite catch phrases, when ever he saw something he didn't like about young people, or someone whom he thought he was qualified to judge.

2 intersting articles in Politico.eu One was about Luton and the welfare state and the other about the issue with Brexit and Farmers getting help to bring the harvest in, basically can not be done without East Europeans.

Which articles? A link would be helpful.

Never was a problem but now is, obviously unsustainable.

Most problems have solutions, but sometimes people are more interested in following someone else's twisted agenda, e.g. See fascism.

Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but condensed.

I don't quite understand why right wingers have such a fixation with the fall of the Roman empire. Rome fell for a great number of reasons and it's too simplistic to lay the blame for its collapse on only or two causes, not least of of them were over expansion of the empire and an East West split.
