Changing name on Green Card

Hi, in April I got my green card based on marriage to a U.S. Citizen. When my husband and I got married we decided that I should keep my maiden name so it's easier when applying for adjustment of status since all my documents - passport, SSN, drivers license, etc. had my maiden name on them.

I would like to take his family name now. I know that I have to start with changing the marriage certificate and then filing form I-90. Does anyone know how long will that procedure take? My green card is good untill April 2018 - I just want to change the name on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

It's expensive to file I-90.

It's easiest to wait until you file your I-751 and file it with your married name.

Agree with above. The I-90 will cost you $450, and takes months.

I do not know what visa you adjusted from, or how long you were married before receiving your green card. Usually when people say they got a green based on marriage to a USC, they are not talking about AOS from a K visa, which this forum is for. So, IF you have a conditional green card, then wait until you file for ROC, and use your married name when you file. Then your 10 year green card will come in your married name.

Thank you both. Also "Adjustment of status (Green Card) from family based visas" made the most sense for me to ask for help and advice.

Yes, if you are adjusting from a K visa. The description of this forum states it is for K visa AOS cases. The admin won't change the name of the actual forum to state it is AOS from K visas, so he just added the info to the description. I knew it would still be confusing.

If you are adjusting from another visa type, then the forum would be AOS from Work, Student & Tourist Visas, or for a question about changing the name on the green card and filing an I-90, the General Immigration-Related Discussion forum would work too.
