4 weeks after applying for SSN... nothing

What's going on?

We applied for an original SSN on July 25, soon after receiving my wife's EAD. The clerk there gave us a form which said it'll take about 4 weeks until the SSN arrives. Well, today marks the 4th week (well, actually this Monday is the 4th week, but I'm not counting weekends).

Apparently, we need to wait for DHS to approve my wife's EAD status. We called today to our local SSA office and the lady said that they're still waiting on DHS for approval! This is so irritating, my wife got employed over 2 weeks ago, and the employer will not let her begin until she has her SSN.

(she explained that she's legally able to work w/o a SSN, so long as she has an EAD... but her employer doesn't seem to care)

Is there anything we can do? At what point in the future can we request assistance from the SSA or DHS? So far the only thing i've done was fill out this: https://faq.ssa.gov/ics/support/ticketnewwizard.asp?style=classic

Same (ish) situation! Did your wife get hers by now? Help!

Hey there, yes she did get it. She actually got it like 3 days after I made this post! Be patient and surely it will come.

You can always call your local SSA and ask if the number has been generated. If so, you can go in person (with ALL of your documents) and get the number written on a piece of paper.

Hi

Same situation. It's been 3 weeks now and they say the application hasn't clear yet from DHS. What worries me is that my colleagues got their social security card in 2 weeks! What I really don't understand is why do we have to go through this verification nonsense since it was the DHS that issued me a valid TN visa, it's ridiculous. I can't get paid If I don't have a SSN so it's making me crazy.

Anybody can shed some light on this for me?

My advice after over 2 months 'waiting' for DHS approval is to chase the SSA up, relentlessly. There seems to be some kind of apathy between the two departments whereby your application can linger in some kind of void.

After 4 weeks I'd go back in, and if they can't show you anything, ask (oh-so-politely) to speak to a supervisor to find out what happens next. They palmed me off multiple times, which I politely accepted. Don't make my mistake of being too passive!

Ok I just called the SS office here in Rochester, NY and told me my application just cleared!!! So it took exactly 3 weeks. They told me I should get the card in no time. Thanks every one I'm so happy.

8-03-16 - NVC case number assigned

8-09-16 – Consulate received

8-24-16 – Interview date @ USEM - Approved!

9-16-16 - CFO completed in Cebu

9-22-16 - P.O.E. Boston, MA

10-08-16 - Wedding!

10-29-16 - Submitted AOS with EAD/AP applications

11-02-16 - AOS package delivered to USCIS Chicago lockbox
