Getting a Colombian prescription filled in the U.S.

Hi Guys,

Anyone know if American pharmacies will honor an RX that was issued in Bogota?

My wife takes a common high blood pressure med and would need it refilled here once her 60 day supply runs out.

She's just now making the permanent move to the U.S. on her IR1 visa.

Most pharmacies only accept prescriptions from U.S. physicians / doctors.

Therefore, you would probably have to take her to a local doctor to get new prescriptions.

Can't she ask her doctor in home country to give her some more like for 6 months? That way she won't have to think about it for awhile before you have a doctor and insurance.

I do not believe they will write any medication out on a foreign prescription.

I'm a pharmacist and we can't do that unfortunately. Some states even have laws that only allow them to fill prescriptions from direct neighboring or close-enough in distance states. She needs to see a provider in the U.S. to write a prescription for her.

Before moving here I went to my Dr. he gave me a prescription for all meds to fill BEFORE leaving. I was able to get more also from office samples. It helped a lot. When I left I had acquired 1 year of prescriptions. It got me though until I was totally on husbands company medical.

As the above posters said, I got my doctor to give me enough to last until I was on my husbands insurance, now that I am I have a US prescription for my medications

Nope.

I had that emergency in 2013. I ran out of meds, our post office in my home country lost the supply my mom sent. I went to a pharmacy and they said that they needed the physician's number to enter in their system so they can't give me a refill. Eventually I had to go to an ER and the doctor there wrote me a prescription and I was able to get my meds.

I learned a bit more here in Bogota since posting the question and we saw her Doctor , which confirmed the info posted by you guys.

Interestingly her particular blood pressure med is available over the counter, so we'll buy a decent supply from Pharmatodo before heading out. Thanks!

Yep, pharmacies will not accept a prescription written by a doctor who is licensed in the United States, and doctors based in the United States will generally demand that a person be rediagnosed in the US before writing a new prescription. Edited July 31, 2016 by Póg mo

I brought enough for nearly a year, I had a letter from my doctor and declared them ( along with some money and a bankers draft)

The customs officer looked very briefly at the letter, clarified how much cash I had and asked if I'd signed the bankers draft - I hadn't, he said it didn't count as money unless it was signed and he just waved me in
