Hello guys! I'm Angelo from Chile.

I don't know if my post belongs here, so if an administrator needs to change it, please do it, thank you!

My future wife (an USC) is going to be my sponsor for my visa. She's been living here in Chile almost her entire life, so for now she's studying and working here.

Our plans are to get married next year and then move to CA (San Diego maybe). The problem for us now is how we can apply for a visa for me, since she doesn't have an US Salary or domicile? (We pretend to live there with a friend who lives there or rent a house). The main problem here's is what we can do about the Affidavit of support?

I'm a pharmacist and next year I'll take my test to practice there (she's a pharmacist too, but from here)

For now we are just saving money, but the are stuck finding more information about we can do about the I-864 requirements.

Thank you guys!

Welcome!

Your wife will be your sponsor, regardless of her income or assets. If she does not meet the requirements, you will need a joint sponsor or a lot of savings. The joint sponsor can be any USC or LPR who is resident in the USA. Doesn't have to be related to you. Doesn't have to live anywhere near you. If you're going to California, it's perfectly acceptable to have Aunt Susan in Florida as the joint sponsor, assuming Aunt Susan fulfils the financial requirements.

As part of the process, your wife will need to demonstrate that she intends to re-establish domicile in the US. There are various ways she can do this - apply for jobs, take a lease on an apartment, open a bank account, etc.

Great!... We have some people that could be the joint sponsors, but that alternative is a little bit difficult, since we don't know if they will sign. So we prefer to think, at least for now, that we will be doing this alone.

Is there any way to know how much (an approximate) money we will need?

PD: Thank you for your quick reply JFH! ;)

Filed: Citizen (apr) Country: Ireland
Timeline

If it is just the two of you- no kids or other dependants- you need just over $20'000 in US based income, or three times as much in assets.

As a heads up, the CR-1 visa takes about a year from filing of initial forms to interview, so if you want to move next year, you may want to quickly and legally get married now and file the petition for the visa; you can always have the big wedding and reception next year if you choose.

What do you mean by this "We pretend to live there with a friend who lives there or rent a house?"

We have a common friend who can give us a place for a time, but, if at that moment that is impossible we will rent a house.
