Hey,

I used to think that the POE ( the place ill give my sealed envelope to) was where ever i enter the usa, which would be JFK in my case.

But then I saw a post where someone was told their POE was Dublin, Ireland as they were going from there?

The reason I ask is because, As I cannot leave nor work for 4 months once entering the US. Me and my fiance were planning on doing our round the world travels before hand and both arriving to JFK together. (so about 5 or more destinations after leaving new zealand before arriving in the u.s)

Or is it as simple as JFK being my POE?

Cheers

The US has some preclearance facilities in some airports around the world, e.g. Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, Ireland, and UAE, where if you are on a flight from that airport directly to the US, you would go through US immigration and customs there, before boarding the flight, and you would basically be a domestic passenger when arriving in the US, rather than going through those things when you first arrive in the US. Either way the result is the same -- you need to go through POE once somewhere when going from outside of the US to the US. Depending on where you fly to JFK from, it is possible that you could POE in another country, but it makes no difference for you.

Dublin is a special case in that it has a US immigration pre-clearance facility whereby passengers clear immigration before getting on the plane in Dublin. There are only a few places in the world that have this (I imagine it's actually very expensive with all the equipment that is needed and the relocation expenses for the CBP employees and their families, etc). Anyway, the only places that have such facilities are the main Canadian international airports, Dublin and Shannon in Ireland, Abu Dhabi in the UAE, Aruba, Bahamas and Bermuda in the Caribbean. If you go through any of those airports on a direct flight from there to the USA you will do the pre clearance there. So Dublin to New York would mean you go through US immigration in Dublin but Dublin to New York via Amsterdam, for example, you would go through immigration in New York as usual.

Timeline in brief:

Pre-clearance in Dublin is awesome and great when you are making a connecting flight in the US and don't have to queue for customs there. The money involved in setting the operation up in Dublin must be enormous (Presume Ireland pays for it)
