Hello everyone, I just found this site and it has been very helpful so thank you to everyone for posting your suggestions and questions.

My wife and I are living in Taiwan, I am a U.S. citizen. We sent our application to the Chicago location a little more than 3 weeks ago. So far we have no received an e-mail or letter in the mail approving the application. We sent it on 8/8, was received on 8/11 and the check was cashed on 8/16.

Is it safe to assume that they have started on my case since they cashed the check?

I have been calling the main number and continue to be transferred to a Tier 2 agent. The problem is that I am always told they will call me back but I cannot enter my phone number because I am out of the country. It's been very frustrating and I'm not sure I will ever be able to get a hold of them. All I really want to know is if the case is in progress and what my receipt number is.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for me? We are just starting the process but already having some difficulties. Thanks ahead of time!

To get the semantics out of the way first, you sent a petition, not an application; you are petitioning, not applying for anything. Your spouse will apply for a visa at a later date.

Since the check has cleared, your petition is now officially in the queue; however, it may not be looked at for some time depending on certain factors. Since you (the petitioner) are living abroad right now, your petition may end up being automatically expedited on that basis. However, that queue is unofficial and USCIS officially denies it exists.

Okay, let me correct the semantics :oops:My petition not my application. Though you have been helpful, my real issue is not receiving my NOA1 and having no clear option to obtaining it. That's great if they are starting the procedure, but it would be helpful for me to know that for sure and to get my receipt number so that I can continue to track my case. Has this issue happened to anyone else?

Often happens to people abroad. You can call the USCIS information line and talk to an ISO, tier 2, and request your case number.

Have you looked further into the process and prepared for domicile and sponsorship?

Is it me or am I reading this wrong? You are saying two different things. You said you sent Petition weeks ago. You say you sent

sent 8/8

received 8/11

check cashed 8/16

But you sent 3 weeks ago which was 6/6.

So i''m confused.

You would be correct to assume it is a typo. Sorry about that, my mind is scattered. I sent it June 8th and check was cashed last week but still haven't heard about a case number and it's been near impossible to speak to a tier 2 agent. They told me I will have to call when they first open and hope to get through, otherwise I am completely out of luck. It's difficult living on the other side of the world, I have other things to be doing, I just wish I could speak to someone who can explain what is happening.

NLR, I have not looked further into domicile and sponsorship, I will do that now.

Try calling on google or skype so you can get a US number so they can call you back.

Try calling on google or skype so you can get a US number so they can call you back.

This - also with skype you can subscribe to their world service and choose any US number available for someone to return your call to that 'local' US number and it will automagically connect to your skype and ring you on your phone

right to assume since the check is cashed that the petition is being processed
