Can I study PhD at UK college with Green card?

Hi, I recently got my Green card and need to move to USA as a resident. However, I also just got an offer to do a PhD at a British university. This means I need to be in UK for 11 months of the year. I know I need to reside in USA for over 6 months per year to maintain my Green card, but are there exceptions if one is studying PhD in another country? The PhD lasts 3 years. I think I only get 2 or 3 weeks vacation per year.

How did you get your GC? I can certainly see it being at risk. Which is more important?

You can come to the US, get your GC & file for a re-entry permit, it allows you to stay out for two years. You can re-apply for a new one (would have to come back to the US to do that) when the two years are up.

Hi, I got the Green card through my mother. She sponsored me. Also, I already went through the airport in USA, did the biometrics finger print process and now returned to my homeland. The Green card arrived by mail. The PhD offer from the UK university also arrived recently. This is why I asked if I could study the PhD in UK. Thanks!

1) Does this mean I need to go to USA first to apply for the re-entry permit, before I go to UK for the Phd?

2)How long do I need to be in USA while I wait for the re-entry permit?

3) When the re-entry permit expires in 2 years later, how long do I need to stay in USA to re-apply for a new re-entry permit? Once my PhD is finished I want to get a job in USA and live there permanently. The UK PhD is half the price of a USA PhD.
