why should I make my parents US residents?

Hi,

I became a U.S. citizen sometime in 2013 or 2014 by marriage (I'm still happily married :luv: ) - A few months ago, a family member started to get on my case/nerves asking me why I haven't helped my parents (Mexican citizens) to become US residents so that they can enjoy the benefits of it. When I ask what are the benefits of being a US residents, I get no answer from my family member. To my knowledge, the only benefit for my parents would be to avoid applying for a US visa every 5 years.

Can somebody enlighten me with some reasons why should I make my parents US residents? Pros, cons? Benefits?

Thank you,

Alan

hi

there aren't really many, of course being closer to you is a benefit

but instead of listening to the family member, you should really ask your parents if they want to, not everybody wants to move here. if they are comfortable over there and older, they might not even want to live here. the medical is expensive, for example

would they live with you? would they work? do they have enough money to live here on their own? you have to talk to them, it's a huge change for older people,

you also have to factor in your wife. you have been married for not too long, if they live with you, will it cause tension in your marriage? will you and your wife have to provide for them or will they live and work on their own?

If they do not plan on living here, only "benefit" is that as residents they will have to file their tax returns with IRS every year.... And worry about not loosing green cards....

Hi aleful,

My parents are retired teachers, they will be willing to come and live with me for the duration of the process but I don't see them staying/living in the US for the rest of their lives. They are not interested in working as they have already retired. I believe my family member was making reference that they would be eligible for some social security benefits? That's one of the reasons I asked and wanted to see if somebody knew something about it.

I'm like you.. I don't think there are many benefits associated to it.

First thats a personal choice...

I will give you my perspective, if it were me, first i would want my mom who has always given everything to enjoy the freedom of being able to choose here or DR.

There are benefits of her being here my children will have her close by and quiet honestly i cannot live with out my mom close by.

"Most" spanish people have strong family ties so this wouldnt be a question of should i but when will i or why havent i.

Good luck

hi

sorry but that person has no clue, just because they are of age, they don't qualify for social security benefits if they haven't worked in the US, so no benefits there, they would have to live off of their retirement from Mexico. Would it be enough to live here, pay all their expenses, especially health insurance?

plus they don't need to be here for the process, you will file for them and in a year they will go through consular processing in Ciudad Juarez, to come with a tourist visa to adjust status is considered immigration fraud.

and if they don't plan to live permanently here, then a GC is a waste of money and time. a GC is for living here, not to use as a tourist visa

Have you asked your parents what they want? ...

Of course... is not like I just pick up the phone and tell them this is what you all going to do. Like I said before, they are willing to do it but they don't plan on staying and living in the US for the rest of their lives. They are OK with applying for a US visa every 5 years or so. I wanted to see if there were other benefits other than not having to apply for a visa every 5 years or so. The replies just confirms my theory that there aren't and it would be a waste of their time and a waste of my money to process their application when they are perfectly happy enjoying their life at home.

I can't see the 'benefit' of them going through all the paperwork and expense, if they're not going to settle here in the U.S. permanently.

It's a really stressful change for older people to go through, as well. Tell your family member to keep their opinions to themselves. :)

I suspect the family member may think 'benefits' = free stuff.

No honey benefits = moms cooking & moms love not everyone sees America as a gateway to free.

I think they were referring specifically to that family member, not you or people with your view. The OP does not seem to be devoid of mom's love and getting on the OP's case to spend $$$ for "mom's cooking" is not what the OP seems to want. :)

Yeah im beginning to see ?? that :rofl: re read lol sorry folks im very Bias when it comes to MAMI??

Im thinking family benefits lol
