I received my N-445 Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony but I won't be in the country. The USCIS web says to return the N-445 with a letter explaining the reason. Has anybody done this before and what was your experience?

I am freaking out. Thanks.

you're allowed to reschedule your oath ceremony, but if you do not make it to your second one, USCIS considers your application abandoned.

If I know it is going to take 13 months to reschedule an oath ceremony, I would cancel my trip even if it is a non-refundable business class ticket.

Did you try anything along the way other day finally contacting your senator? Service requests, infopass, uscis customer service? I wonder why it took so long.

I rescheduled mine recently - and it was very quick. I was also out of the country for my original date (March) - and was rescheduled for the next month (April). This is what I'd posted on VJ:

"Received my rescheduled Oath Date N-445 today (April 11). Oath is scheduled for April 20 (Chicago). I returned the original N-445 on March 14 by mail (original Oath Date was March 22) and requested a new date after April 6 to make sure I was clear of my vacation - and it worked just fine. Website was updated on April 8 to say a new date had been sent out - although I did not receive a confirmation email or text message - I presume because USCIS don't class a reschedule date as a new step in the process."

I tried all of it. Some reschedule without any issues, getting another appointment only a few months after the rescheduled one, others have to wait.

good luck

Thank you all for taking the time to share your experiences. I will reschedule my appointment. I'll be sending the original N445 with the explanation letter that I will be out of the country and hopefully everything will go smooth.

I made an info pass for June 6th just to make sure they received my request by mail and everything is in order. Nothing like taking face to face.

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
