Hello everyone, I registered here because I red online that this is the best place to get honest information about all kind of immigration cases.

I will try to write my story in short text and my main question is do I need to get a attorney/lawyer for my case?

I came to USA in 2010 with ESTA waiver from Lithuania. My father lives illegally here since 2000. My waiver was only for 90 days and I overstayed my visa.

A year ago I got married to an US Citizen. I'm 24 years old she is 23 years old. We want to get me a green card. I went to couple places and one place wants to charge me $3000 for filling everything+coming to interview and another guy ask $1900 but he isn't even attorney he just has an agency that does lots of stuff.

By looking online and emailing these two persons I collected a lot of information and we got almost all papers ready. We brought all papers to one of them but then decided to take it back thinking that we might try by ourselves.

Please if someone were in the same boat as me and did everything by themselves please share the information with me and help me out. I live in Hamptons NY thats why all legal services are sky rocked in pricing. I understand that doing everything by ourselves will take more time but hey I've been illegal here for 5 years. I can wait another few months or more. My main question would be if we make a mistake somewhere or we miss our on a document how complicated situation could get? And if we messed everything up could we just get a lawyer then to help us out? Again, I came here under ESTA Waiver for 90 days. My wife don't make enough so we will have a joint sponsor. Which exact forms I would need to fill? I would really appreciate some feedback on procedures and step-by-step information on how we could work it out by ourselves.

THANK YOU!

Your case is simple and straightforward and I personally don't think it needs a lawyer. Also, doing it yourself does not make it slower. Good luck.

Hi

For me Visajourney has helped me a lot, informative and friendly community ? I could save around $2,000 lawyer fee and that is the best. Anyway months ago I knewnothing about this AOS stuffs and I just simply learned and followed people here (looked at their Signature mostly) like, what forms they used, support documents, fees, etc.

You just need to serch the keyword you want to know and read read and read ?

It wasn't so bad if you make a mistake. It's just delay your processing timeline. Like me I missed something and wasted a month before I received my package back from USCIS too. I misunderstood that I needed to file I-130 separately to Phoenix. Don't! If you file I-130 together with I-485, you have to send both of them to Chicago!

03/15/16. Sent out I-130 and AOS package but instead of filing it concurrently, I misunderstood and filed it separately.

03/23/16. Phoenix lockbox transferred our case (I-130 only) to Nebraska, cashed check, received NOA via text/email.

03/28/16. Received NOA1 I-130 hard copy by USPS

04/08/16. Received the package that we sent to Chicago. Case rejected due to improper filing? We sent it back to Chicago together with I-130 NOA 1 that we received last week (also RFE just in case too) sameday.

04/11/16. Package I-485, I-765 arrived at Chicago lockbox the second time.

04/19/16. Received NOA1 for I-485&I-765 via Text&email with new case number. They also cashed the check today.

05/02/16. Received Biometric letter, scheduled on May 9

05/09/16. Biometric completed

05/25/16. I-485 Case updated online, case is ready to be scheduled

06/29/16. I-130 Case updated online, case was transferred..

06/30/16. Submit USCIS E-request to update/expedite I-765

07/11/16. Received EAD By mail

09/09/16. Interview date is scheduled on Oct 14

10/14/16. Approved, status changed to New card is in production

10/15/16. Status online for I-130 & I-485 updated to Case was approved

10/20/16. Status online for I-485 updated to Card was picked up by USPS with tracking number.

10/21/16. Received NOA2 for I-130 & I-485

10/22/16. Received the card from USPS ?

Check out the guides section up top.

Don't count on others. You are capable of your own research!! The guides are very helpful and give step by step instructions.

That is the wrong guide for this situation, though.

Mostly I was just looking to get few different opinions on should I get the lawyer or not. Thanks to everyone for replies!

I guess that's what we are implying....this site should give you the tools u need to handle the paperwork without one.

I think I can speak for the group that almost no one would suggest you need a lawyer, since most everyone on here does it without.
