My advise to all filing immigrant visa applications - DON"T check "send me the social security card by mail", when you fill out the electronic form on NVC website!

Our experience: we checked it. My husband arrived in the country on December 11th, we went to the SS office right away, where they told us, since we applied through the immigration, they have nothing to do with that, they can't even take the application now, we have to wait for the card to arrive for 5-6 weeks, until the end of January.

Last week we went to the SS office again. They took our application, saying the card would arrive within 5-10 business days. Today the card arrived. It took only 6 calendar or 3 business days.

When filing through the immigration service, the card can be received in 10 days upon the arrival earliest. Not to apply through the website and going to the SS office in person is the best option.

usually,

if a ssa clerk can find you in the SAVE db,

then you are eligible to apply.

CR-1/IR-1 visa holders - SAVE db is showing you 2 to 3 weeks after POE date, date varying due to CBP humans handling the data input.

K-1 visa holders - SAVE db updated immediately at POE, so can go in next day to apply.

IMO, you:

1. went in too early and

2. got a brain-dead SSA clerk.

did you review my SSN how-to? yes? no? if no, why no ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Inaccurate. Got mine much faster without going to SS office by checking that box.

It's all humans putting things in systems, so it's somewhat luck.

There was the whole topic of us with this kind of "luck". That's why I am sharing our experience.

How do you know the card arrived because of the SSN filing and not by ticking the box? I thought ticking the box just basically had them do the paperwork for the SSN behind the scenes...

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

When we entered at POE (JFK), I specifically mentioned that we had ticked the box for the SSN. The CBP officer told me specifically to go to the SSN office.

We went 3 days after POE and got the SSN 3 days later.

My advice? If you have an SSN office close to you, go directly to the office.

We had the same experience with my husband. I say still check it, but as about 2 weeks after arrival go to the SS and apply on your own. Huby waited 6 weeks and we went to the SS office and applied and it still took another 4 weeks because, according to them, his name had one too many letters and they had to send his form to NY.
