Hello,

My husband and I will be leaving next week to go to the States. He was given an IR1 visa. The last thing left to pay is the $165 immigrant fee, which we had read on this forum that we didn't have to pay that right away and it could even wait til we were in the States to be paid. Since the cost of traveling back and forth to Nigeria from Ghana 3 times in the last month and then the cost of our tickets to the US has pretty much put a big dent in our pockets, we were hoping to pay that fee about 2 weeks after he entered the States. I was just now reading the paper he got when he picked up the Visa package and it says "you must submit the $165 payment online AFTER receiving your visa package from the Dept of State and BEFORE you depart for the US"..........so is that set in stone? Has anyone ever paid it AFTER getting into the US ?

Read at the above page. You do not have to pay prior to entering the US. The green card will not be sent until after the free is received.

Don't worry about what the paper says. They all say that probably to encourage people to pay so they don;t get to US and get busy and forget. You have up to a year to pay. Just travel and enjoy. Mercies Journey's.

Thank you for that link. I have a question regarding this: Under exemptions for paying the fee it lists "K nonimmigrants." This is a fiance visa right? If so, why was my fiance given the form with instructions to pay the fee?

Human error.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Much appreciation as always!

Yeah, I do know that fiancé visa's don't pay this fee right now. I believe all your other fees will come into play after you marry and adjust status.
