It was a tough interview

Timeline

We went to our interview appointment yesterday. Had to wait 90+ mins before our names were called, even though we arrived before appointment time.

Our story: Meet my spouse in China (04/2014) while that time she already applied and approved J-1 visa to US for work exchange. We met again in US when she working on her J-1 (6/2014) and started our relationship, I asked and propose to her at the end of 2014 after she fulfilled her J-1 requirement, and got married in US. Filed AOS on December 2014 and my spouse stayed and living with me in the US, got the interview finally this month. (8/2015)

The interview took a full 45+ mins.

Things we didn't do well:

*Not enough pictures - we don't have wedding reception or honeymoon pictures since we didn't do either of that yet.

*Not enough evident of joint account/assets - our joint bank account verification and joint lease agreement is not good enough, officer want to see the monthly banking statement that shows we use the account together like on daily basis or utility bills with both names

*We don't have joint assets such as car, house, property....etc (who as newly weds have all of those nowadays?)

*I didn't bring my full wallet into the interview, thus can't show officer if I have any bank cards with joint names & wallet pictures*my guess* ( I left in car because I knew the security checkpoint hassle, brought just my ID and all documents )

Tests we passed: (but quite awkward)

*Able to unlock the passcode on your partner's phone

*Able to dig through your partner's phone to locate some pictures or selfies of ourselves

*Able to verifies my employment history back dates like 5 years

Questions that didn't mention:

I thought many personal and private questions will be asked, but none. No sex life questions, no "why you liked him/her" , no daily routine check, we didn't tested to memorize each other's birthday/anniversary ..etc

Conclusion:

We didn't grant approval on site, our case will be reviewed and decisions will be made and notify us within 30 days.

Wish us luck and hope next time I update this post will be a good news.

My Husband couldn't unlock my phone if he had to. He has never had, nor he says will he ever have, a cellphone. In fact, it rang this morning on the way to the post office, and he couldn't work out how to answer it. Really. :D

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

I have already added my husband to utility bills and deed before he went to interview for visa

Do you own a car to add your spouse?

Does spouse have a debit card for banking?

Changed my beneficiary on life insurance and my will to show co-mingle funds for the visa interview

Even if you don't own a lot, make out a will / each of you/ example forms online / young people fail to see how important this is as you don't think you own anything but it is especially when you start to have children and want to leave specific instructions on their care if something happens

Good luck

Asking those question is a basic knowledge means how well you know your fiance'/wife. And all the evidence they wanted is to see how true that you are a marriage couple. Bank records or assets means that since you marriage her, that you should put her name in your house or anything that you own. This will tell that you can afford to give her,her basic needs. So that she nor you will not be a problem to the government about having financial issues.

To not have any of these basic things 7 months into a marriage raises Read Flags that's why not the approval.

Most couples go get credit cards and add each other to their accounts so as they have a SS# and married. That should have been the first thing you did.

What about your lease if you are renting are you both listed if not why?

There have been a few holidays since December where are your pictures of you and her with family and friends.

They asked about the phone code to see if you even knew each other because you didn't show anything that you were even together. I would not be surprised if they order up a field visit to your home checking you out.

You need to be going to the bank, adding each other to your insurance (if you have it). Now. Your approval depends on it.

USCIS office is not an embassy - different rules. You can bring electronics to the USCIS office - I had my phone when I had my naturalization interview.
