Making new friends

My fiance is quite nervous about leaving old friends behind and finding new ones (while of course keeping in touch with old). I said work is a good place to make new friends as well. Are there any good tips from anyone who experienced this?

I've lived in several different countries and I always find work or school to be the number one place to meet new friends. The gym is another good place, if your fiance does a group activity like zumba, everyone's happy and relaxed and it's easy to start a little chat.

You said your fiance, so I guess that means you're on the K-1 visa? That means your fiance won't be able to work straight away, which means he/she will have time to maybe take a course, like a cooking class or language class. That's a great way of meeting new people.

What I've done is actually connect with a few people here on VJ that I can see are headed to Austin, where I'm going too. It's nice to talk about the experience with like-minded people and hopefully, we'll meet up once we're in Austin too.

I find that work, US spouses work friends, US spouses friends are the best place to start. Also facebook and skype are great for keeping in touch with friends back home.

Also for homesickness I recommend buying a few food treats from back home every now and then, Amazon is great for this and I don't know about where you live but we have cost plus world mart which has a few of the home comforts as well.

Personally I view work colleagues as colleagues, there are no "friends" at work when everyone is swimming around the sharktank. Luckily my husband has good friends who have become mine as well on previous trips over there. I think joining some type of club for a hobby of yours is a good place to find friends too.
