Question when fiance and child arrive

Hello all, still waiting to receive our NOA2, but just some questions on my mind.. might be stupid questions!

Some background information, fiance is bringing our child over here (1 year and 1 month), I do not have health insurance, I'm 26 and in great shape, I take care myself, no problem paying the yearly penalty..

As for my baby boy,.. I definitely do want him to have health coverage. What do I do when he first comes? What do I do to make sure he can go to any pediatrician for any reason.

My work offers health insurance coverage, should I just add myself to the coverage my work offers and ask my boss if I can add my boy?

If you need insurance right away, look into short term insurance. We did that when we arrived with 8 months old twins; basically, it is insurance you can buy for 30-180 days and is valid as soon as you send off the payment. We went with BCBS because it is so widely accepted, but I am sure other companies have it as well.

Longer term, check with your HR department if you can add just your son, without you and your wife (if that is what you want to do).

At my work place, in order to add a dependent the employee also has to have coverage (something about having a primary subscriber). My plan also offers a cheaper rate for adding children than a spouse/partner. Having a family really changes the dynamics of things in regards to health insurance coverage. I use to pay for the cheapest coverage when I was single, but now I ended up getting better plan due to my wife and children. You will need to check with your employer's HR/benefits department on the options that you may have.

Thank you guys for the advice, I will look into both ideas..

I also heard about CHiP, not sure if my family will qualify. Just want to make sure things are taken care of when he arrives. He's a very strong boy, just worried about him getting sick while ON the airplane.

If you have public hospitals in your area use them.

In Dallas Fort Worth area part of your property tax pays for public hospitals.
