Hi All,

I have a question for you all. My wife is planning on going back to Thailand for 6 weeks this summer and I was planning on applying for citizenship for her this week. But now I am worried that the interview or the swearing ceremony will come during the trip. I haven't bought tickets yet but was planning on sending her Late July - Early Sept. So My questions are:

1) If I file now, will there be a conflict with that trip?

2) When will I kow if there is going to be a conflict (If I know a month in advance I can just wait to buy the ticket)

3) Can any of the appointments be reschedule in the event of a conflict? If so which ones?

Thanks guys! hopefully I'll be on this list with you guys!

1- Probably

2- When you receive the appointment date in the mail.

3- All appointments can be rescheduled, but rescheduling may lead to delays and complications.

If you apply now, it's very likely that she'll complete biometrics before leaving. It is possible that she'll have an oath ceremony scheduled before September, but that would be fast. So your biggest concern is the interview (but possibly also the oath); that will probably fall during her time abroad. You can request that it be rescheduled, but as I said, USCIS sometimes messes up rescheduling requests. They may not process the request or they may reschedule her interview for another time before she has returned. Rescheduling a second time may not be easy and may require her to visit them in person or at least spend a good deal of time on the phone. On the other hand, many people do reschedule successfully with only minor delays of a few weeks to a few months.

You and your wife will have to make an informed decision, but I suggest you consider avoiding the issue all together by mailing the application when she returns from her vacation. Unless there's a reason why she can't delay natiralization by a few months, this might be the easiest thing to do.

Just make sure that the six month trip doesn't affect her physical presence requirement for time spent in the U.S.

I would recommend postponing the trip or the filing of citizenship. Perhaps find out which she wishes to accomplish first. I would think going back to Thailand. It'll only delay the citizenship process a few months.
