Filling a 1040 while spouse lives overseas

Hello all, I have a question concerning IRS. I tried calling them but they weren't helpful, I will try emailing them, however this is the concern. My dad is GreenCard holder and needs to file his 1040 for 2014, he obviously has a social sec number. Based on my understanding, because he is married, he also needs spouse's SSN or taxpayer ID even if he is filling separately? what if she is not here in US and doesn't have any of the numbers (SSN or TID). Anyone in this predicament or have the experience of filling taxes while married and spouse overseas? as in prior to bringing her or whatever the case was or has been?

Thank you!

I am USC

He only needs the social security number or tax id number if he is filing married jointly. If he is filing married separate, and his wife live in another country,he can put the letter NRA (non resident alien) in the line

He would be Married Filing Jointly, listing his wife and writing NRA(Non Resident Alien) in place of her SSN.

I do not think he can file jointly if his wife is in another country. I could be wrong but if he files jointly his wife will need ss or tax ID number. He can

File married separate and write NRA in.

Also to add if his wife comes over here at later date and get social security number He can amend his filing status from married separate to married filing jointly. I believed it can be done up to 3 years after the taxes has been filed. Usually, not always married filing jointly has better tax advantage.

My bad. I think you are correct. After reading through IRS Publication 17, to claim an exemption for a NRA they would need a SSN or ITIN to file jointly. Otherwise, it would be as you say. Although filing separately will be at a higher tax rate. I personally would go after that exemption.

No. He can only file a joint return with a spouse with a SSN or ITIN.

A joint return with a spouse and writing NRA will be rejected.
