Steps after buying new car?

Hi. I just bought a car from a dealership, someone told me that i have to go the DMV and register it. But when i went there, the front desk lady told me that if i bought it from a dealership i should just wait for a mail from them which should include the plate, the title and the registration tag. The car has the inspection tag marked till October of 2016.

I just checked that i don't have the title. So is that right? I just have to wait? Thank you

funny I just bought a car yesterday! congrats...

the dealership does everything for you..well that's what I have always known.. you wait to get your plates.. it will either come to your house or it will come to the dealer and they will call you to come pick it up

with the title .. if you bought it the dealer has the title or is working on getting it.. I would call the dealer and ask if they have the title then they should tell you if they have it or working on getting it. and if they have it like DMV states it will be mailed to you.

but as far as DMV like here where I am the dealership took care of all that for me.

The dealer should have provided a temporary title at the time of sale. Contact dealer and ask why they did not provide you that.

yea think so there is no such thing as temp title..im sure they meant temp plates.

yup that sound right! and it shouldn't take long for your plates to come.. so keep a look out.

When i bought the car i got dealer plates and could take the car with me for a couple days until the dealer got my plates.

When i got my plates i also got my title etc. Dealer took care of everything.

Depends on state, probably depends on dealer, but one of the great things about going to dealers is not having to go to the DMV. Mine swaps the plates and does all that mumbo jumbo.

The dealer takes care of it... that's one of the reasons you pay extra, so you don't have the hassle.

I don't know what the wait time is on new titles in your state, but our last 2 states we did it in, it took 2-3 months for the title to come in the mail.

yeah i got a temporary paper plate number. Here in Houston they put in in a plastic bag and screw it where the plate goes. Mine is valid till March.

I guess i'll receive the papers before then

But if you see the texas dmv page, it says that you have one month to register the car.

Everything is so confusing. Tomorrow i'll call the dealership and ask..

In Colorado my husband has had to go register the vehicle himself after buying. They give him temp tags of course that last 3 months but he still had to go get insurance, then register the vehicle before they expired.

Looks you are near Houston? Like I am...

If you bought a truly brand new car, then the dealer should take care of

getting the car registered and order a new license plates for you.

I think it'll come in 2 to 4 weeks, and dealer will call you to come in

and they will install it for you.

If you don't hear from them after about 3 weeks, then call them.

They are not always timely prompt as was in my case...

they had sat on the license plates for several days until I called to learn about it.

If by chance you bought a used car, then you need to confirm with the dealer.

Big dealers tend to take care of used car license plates as well,

but small dealers sometimes do not and you may have to register it yourself.

Lastly...make sure the car is insured.
