You shouldn't count on your naturalization being approved before it is, and you won't be a citizen until you're sworn in. The correct thing to do is renew your greencard before it expires so that you're current for your interview and naturalization ceremony.

Good luck!

You don't need to renew your green card if you file for naturalization 6 months or more before your green card expires. Since you applied more than six months before expiry you are fine. Your LPR status does not expire, only your residence card.

i see

so, let's create an scenario. my green card expires in june 2015, and I send my application in april 2015 with my $680

WHAT DO THEY DO?

do they refuse my application, or accept it and cash the check, while letting me know, that I have to renew my green card to become a citizen, in other words, i will end up paying 680 + 450

lol

regardless if they continue with application process and cash the check, or if they refuse your application all together, you will still pay the same 680 + 450

With no actual experience, I would suspect that they would accept your application and cash the check. You would be held up after interview since you would need to show your GC at the interview and they would be aware that it is expired. They wouldn't approve you for Naturalization until you renew your card.
