Could anyone advise me on filing a tax return from outside the US? Is it possible/easy to do yourself online or better to hire a lawyer? Any advice on the specific form? Should we call IRS?

A bit of background, we have got our case number and are looking at getting docs together for the IV/AOS package. My husband has been non resident for years and didn't realize he should have done a tax return. We have done our returns in Spain over the last several years - are these used for the US one?

Thank you very much in advance.

It's not all complicated. You can get instructions and past forms [1040] here --> http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Filing-Past-Due-Tax-Returns

http://apps.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/priorFormPublication.html?value=1040&criteria=formNumber&submitSearch=Find

and follow the instructions.

Good luck!

we've lived in spain for 12 years. in 2012 i decided to file with free online with turbotax. big mistake! These online tax website would not let me file properly, claiming my foreign address, children, mortgage in spain, salary in spain etc. (I would get errors.. so, i ended up filing single and with my mom's us address… not a good idea!)

in 2013 I used taxesforexpats.com. So worth the money. trust me.

Great service. They know their expat stuff.

I received a refund of $2000 for 2013. Then I went to amend my 2012 with them….received another $2000. Now I am filing my 2011 with them and will most likely receive a similar amount. I would not have received these refunds without them!!!

Yes, even though you live abroad you must always file in the US, no matter how much money you make, or don't make.

I receive a tax refund from the spanish gov and another from the US gov. I can claim my kids in both countries.

I suggest you file married filing jointly. my husband applied for an itin number, because he hasn't got a SSN yet.

hope this helps.

About to contact taxesforexpats. That is exactly what we were looking for as the whole tax return thing looks so confusing. We pay a lawyer to do our Spanish one and we just have to sign so we were really hoping for something similar. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks a million to you all for your help.

That's great. They have been so helpful and have got us awesome refunds. I will continue using them when we move to the US. My brother lives abroad and uses them too.

We pay $350 to get our taxes done, but the refund they get us makes up for it. Plus they save me so much time and stress!!

if you want, when you sign up, tell them I recommended you. Just give them this link (client referral link): https://www.taxesforexpats.com/clt/KK515

Good luck on your visa journey!!
