Hi, i came to USA at the age of 23 as a F1 student. At the age of 27 i got my 2 year green card and I got a 10 year green card when i was 29.

Now i'm putting all the papers together for citizenship application. I checked online, I have never been registered for selective service. Do i have to register now and apply or i don't have to register at all?

Sounds like you have aged out, how old are you?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

My recollection was that is you were over 30 it was too late, check but I think you should.

Since you were in a legal non immigrant status until you reached 26 you were exempt from registration.

So you shouldn't have any problem with naturalization.

And as I recall, you would need documentation that states that, from the Selective servie office

According to the selective service chart a student on a valid student visa does not need to register. Once you became a LPR you would have needed to register, however; you were over 25 years of age and thus not required to register. The age range is 18 to 25 years old. Once over 25 you have aged out. As long as your F1 visa was valid from the age of 23 to 25 you did not need to register.

Range is 18-26 (doesn't change anything here though).

If you were not required to register, there isn't any additional documentation that you need to provide. I became a GC holder a month and a half after my 26th birthday. The IO at my Naturalization interview asked about it and I explained that I became a PR after age 26, even though it was only a couple months. He didn't ask for any documentation indicating I wasn't required to register. He made some note on the application since their work is double checked and he wanted it noted.

You don't need anything to show your selective service status because your were a lawful non-immigrant when you were 26.

Okay, It is through the age of 25 so once you achieve the age of 26 you no longer have to register. Also, if you failed to register when required to do so, you have while you are 26 to make up for it. Otherwise, you will have to wait until after you are 31 to apply for Naturalization. Just being clear here. Still does not apply to the OP, but if others are reading I want to be sure they get the correct information.

The age range is 18-26... this is even one of the 100 questions... meaning that once you turn 26, you cannot register. I'm not sure where you got the info about having the age of 26 to register... everything I've read says that you CANNOT register once you have turned 26; it's too late. But please correct me if you have found something stating otherwise.

If you become a permanent resident or are in the US illegally at any time after you turn 18 and before you turn 26, you must register. If not, you don't have to provide anything.

I have a question re. this. I registered just before my 26 birthday as part of my application for a greencard. I didn't receive the greencard until I was 27, but I did register for SS just under the wire before 26.

My question is: when a pending green card application is not yet approved, what status is the person under? I came to the US on a temporary workers visa, and that's obviously not an immigrant status, but then I remained here for about two years under the "pending green card" status. That shows intent to be permanent, so it is an immigrant status (though clearly not yet permanent)? I wonder if I ever had to apply for SS? I'm not quite clear on what that transitory state is.

The question on the N-400 calls it immigrant, not permanent, so I wonder if there is a difference. I didn't have my LPR status until post-26, but on the n-400 I said yes as to being a male between 18-25 in the US and as such put the Selective service number in there. But I wonder if I should have put no because I was not a permanent immigrant at that point :)

That's a really good and tough question.... it says that you have to register if you were anything other than a "lawful non-immigrant" between the ages of 18 and 26.... so, what if you were here on an immigrant visa (for example a CR1) ... that is a lawful immigrant status... but does it count? No idea to be honest... I suspect that most interviewers would let this hypothetical case slide.... perhaps the same for the case you brought up too.

"Pending green card" is not a status. What visa did you enter on? Did you maintain a lawful nonimmigrant status until you were at least 26?
