SSN for K-1 holder. What kind of ID to show?

Hello.

I read the Step by step for SSN and there it's saying that to apply for a SSN is necessary:

1.The SS-5 form you downloaded and filled out (they have some at the office if you forget).

2.your Passport (with the K-1 Visa in it)

3.your valid I-94: Electronic I-94 Copy; or (for older entries) an original (and bring a front/backside copy) of a valid paper I-94

4.another form of valid ID (as defined in the SS-5 instructions)

5.You should also bring the document RM 10211.530 that you printed out

My question regards number 4.

Considering I'm obviously not from USA, and I don't have any form of USA ID (for a driver's license here in NJ we need the SSN first), what else would they accept as extra ID besides the passport itself?

I would say your passport will be enough. Under a J1 visa I got a SSN and for sure I didn't have a State ID. Take your marriage certificate as well.

this confuses the SSA clerks...

apply in VISA Name..

Sorry, might have been useful for a J1 visa holder,

but for a K-1 visa holder - it absolutely confuses the SSA clerks.

Avoid Confusion - apply in VISA Name, ask for SAVE database look up on VISA Name and/or A#.

I'm still single and our plan is to get my SSN before the marriage (because some people say that after is slower or whatever, anyway I need it because I want the local driver's license).

I have a birth certificate and official translation, I hope it will be enough. Also will carry my college diploma (and of. translation) just in case.

Wife applied in married name. Had like a 10 day wait period before she could file. We married 2 days after her POE. So of course file for SS in married name Used certified marriage certificate, passport, birth certificate, and what else that may of been needed (been a while) NO issues, NO confusion

Sorry didn't look at your last post.. I'm not sure about slower but took about a mont to get SS in hand filing after marriage.

You probably only need the I-94 and passport with your K-1 visa in it, but bring the birth cert just in case.

We showed his birth certificate as his second form of ID. It was accepted with no problems. Good luck!

Just print that page, though they didnt even need to look at it with us. I guess its just in case the SSA clerk doesnt know what to do with a K1 visa application.

Application that you can fill out at the office.

and that's it. Birth certificate is nice if you have it (Translated), we did not and it was ok. also no second ID needed.

My fiance just got her SSN and that is all we did.

I went with everything, but he needed only the passport, the I-94 and the application. He looked at the birth certificate just because I said I had it, but if I did'nt it was probably not a problem either.
